Midwest Habitat- 2023 Happenings

Insanely busy week. Prepped and planted a ton of switchgrass. Cleaned up an old farmstead to plant natives. Planted 13,000+ miscanthus rhizomes. Put in a water hole. Finished 2 more burns. Completed a farm consult. Potted chestnuts and a couple oak varieties.

Looks awesome. What did you do to prep the ground prior to your planting the MG? Looks like maybe tilled it up and then how did you make the groves in the fresh soil?

Some spots just raked it close. Other spots used muddle buster right next to furrow to cover.
Very interested in your MG planting techinique...as I will be planting some myself soon. I can get a middle buster and I have a tiller. How does this sound?

1. Deep till a swath, which will be 6' wide.
2. Cut two furrows in, about 24" apart from each row.
3. Deposit rhizomes in trough, spaced "X" inches apart.
4. Bury rhizomes by dragging over the furrows lightly with a land plane.
5. Drive over the buried rhizomes with an ATV to pack the soil a little.

I have already mowed the areas that I intend to plant, FYI.

Never thought about a wagon wheel concept, interesting. When you cut the tree completely versus hinge-cutting do you leave the stumps alive to sprout stems for food? The Stihl MS 261 is a fantastic saw.

Like many folks spring time is crazy busy so I have done a terrible job updating this. Here's some thing that been going on the last month.

That a pull behind planter or 3 point? Wish I had bought my neighbors Deeere 4 row before he sold it..

Use your genesis for switch?

Something about a clean newly planted / cultipacked field makes me excited.. :D

3 point 7100. In my world 3 point is way better for two reasons. I am generally doing smaller plots with alot of turning around. 3 point is way faster in that case. Secondly, I'm all over the place trailering so much easier for that.

I do plant switchgrass with genesis, along with several other methods.
