Milo

I have 4, each half acre strips of red & white GS planted. Could I apply liquid N to them?

I'm assuming you're referring to UAN 32-0-0 (Ammonium Nitrate) in liquid form. I think you'd have to keep your application pretty light to prevent leaf burn (less than 20# N / acre?).

A safer bet would be coated Urea or AMS right before a rain to prevent leaf burn. Sorghums/Corn tend to funnel and catch a lot of broadcasted fertilizer.

Drilled my 1.8 acre CRP food plot to Milo this year. First time planting. Checked it tonight and it is extremely weedy with foxtail. But most concerning was no heads on the stalks yet. Drilled late around middle of June.

Anyone know when to expect the heads to come out? If they don’t come out in the next 2-3 weeks, I’ll likely nuke and try to salvage with some rye/clover or something. Thoughts?

And here is where the Milo meets the early successional planting for the quail safe CRP. sunflower, buckwheat, grain sorghum, sun hemp and more.

I’d give it a little time . Is this planted for pheasants or deer ? Both ?

Patience grasshopper.. ;)

You have some healthy looking milo plants in there. You should get some nice heads on those.

FWIW, grasses don't seem to have the yield drag on milo like they do corn.

Your mix is going to create some great fall, winter cover!

Ha! Sure hope you are correct!

Developed into a good stand, happy with the results. Lots of good heads on here, despite the weed pressure. This 4 FT variety headed out over 5 FT easily, going to make the deer work for this food!

Already getting a few nibbles in the section closest to the edge...

Holding the camera over my head - Can see how "messy" a drill is compared to a planter! Areas with good coverage actually have much less weed pressure.

Off to the right is the early successional edge up to the treeline.

Always interesting to me that high quality certified seed always has stray varieties throughout, the occasional 8' plant, or yellow / dough head maturing much later than the others..

Looks awesome - I need to take some current pics of mine. The deer don't know what it is but it crazy the amount of doves and birds in the strips.

In one strip as an experiment I did plant standard rate of grain sorghum, then an ultra light rate of hybrid "screen" sorghum to see how it'd do together and add height to break up line of sight. Been a total success. Again, need to take some current pics, these are from Sept 4th

Surprising amount leftover, especially given the area was only 1.5 acres, and the three different single digit cold fronts we've had. Kicking myself for not at least mowing a portion as a "test patch" to see if that nets better use.

All in all, not bad for a drill. Can't be disappointed with the results.

Lastly, I really like how milo (like corn) stands well into late season. Some great winter cover there for a lot of critters..

I would like to hear from the others that planted Milo this past year on the deer usage?

FWIW, I watched a few bucks come out and munch on the heads from time to time.

Definitely didn't get larger groups in the winter weather hitting hard like I imagined. However, my neighbor had a good amount of standing beans that had 10-20 deer in them nightly. I suspect that was part of the picture.

They hammered mine, and in places I know the local deer have never seen milo before. It was really awesome actually. Would walk through beans and green to eat the heads on some occasions. I won't plant entire fields of it, but will always have at least the edges planted in milo from now on. Just something else for them to pick at. I had 3 acres across 3 different large plots and not one head or seed is left in any of them.

The best part is, it's SO easy and cheap to grow. I don't know why more guys don't plant it after trying it myself. Requires virtually no inputs besides seed, fuel, and weed killer.

Plan to go wild this coming year. Have some ideas for soft funneling deer. Seemed like they really liked walking the edges of the long strips I had

Where is everyone getting their seed? I did a red/white mix this year, but believe I read you only want red?

Really? You must have some fertilizer built up in your ground? I planted milo last year, and fertilized, but not enough I'm afraid. It filled in well but few heads I believed was caused by lack of N,P,K...I didn't plant too thick. I thought Milo has the same Fert needs as corn? I tried to get by with less than half N,P, K and didn't work out...

The variety I use is from Richardson Seed = RS 230 Hybrid Grain Sorghum.

It's a red variety. Welters used to have a similar variety, this one gets about 4'-6' tall. Red varieties have higher tannin levels which keep birds, deer, etc. away until they turn red. WGF Milo is also a red variety but it only tops out around 24" or so..

White milo doesn't hardly make it to hunting season for me, every bird on the planet eats it in the dough stage.

Very similar needs yes.. About 1# - 1.2# N, K per bushel.

But you aren't getting 230 bpa in Milo. Back off to about 100# of each and you're fine. That's what I used and my production was excellent this year, despite the drought. (Milo does extremely well on very little rainfall).

I split my N between AMS and Urea however, which gives it more of a time release formula..
