Missed

Well, I went out last night, and about 5:30 had 2 does and a button buck work through. And at 6:00, I had a bruiser of an 8 pt come through. I have been after him since last year when he was about a 135" and this year looks to be about 155". He came in, got around behind me. I got ready for a shot, and misjudged the distance. I shot right under him. I was so mad at myself. The buck really didnt spook at all, after the shot, he actually just ran into the field and stood there looking back, then turned and trotted back into the bottom where he came from. I am going to let the area settle down for a few days. Do you think until Friday would be enough time to hopefully have things settle down, and then get back into the stand Saturday morning if things are good? Sorry for the long post...

I'm sure glad I've never done that..

I wish I could say that I've ever had a second chance at a buck I've missed but I'm lucky to see em the first time let alone after I fire a "warning shot"

If he smelled you or saw you at all, you may want to try setting up in a different area.

I did the exact same thing, except I shot over him, a couple of years ago. He just bounded about 40 yards into the woods, stood there for ever and then just melted into the trees. He didn't stomp, snort or anything. I never saw him again.

Good luck. But you have to remember that rut is a crazy time and anyhting could happen. that'll be your best bet!! hope you get another shot.

I'd go right back when you get good winds. They are still likely on a "routine". If he didn't smell you and just heard the arrow, he might have thought it was a bird or something.

6 years ago my cousin saw a 150 class at 7 yards. He banged his bow on the tree as he went to shoot and the deer scooted off before he could loose an arrow at him. It was my cousin's last day to hunt of the year. Two days later, I went out and hunted a stand 50 yards away and he came right through under the stand my cousin was in, then came past mine and I hammered him.

Here's a tip too- prior to the season, my brother and I use some flagging tape and put at least one marker at the 25 yard mark at each of our stands. It makes range estimation a snap when there's a buck around. We've been doing that for about 7-8 years, and we've not missed a deer inside the marker since. Once they are "in the zone" you just need to put the pin on him and let it go.

kinda on that sorta thing i had a big buck come in two weeks ago and he was around for about 20 mins. He was standing behind a big brush pile and finally he came out almost right under my stand. He was prolly at 5 yards and i drew back and leaned forward and my stand creaked. Do you think he is gone for good or do you think he will be back??

A miss is better than a marginal shot atleast!! I had a clean miss Wednesday. He wasn't huge, and we would have been a buck that would be a great buck in 2 yrs or so(he was only a 2 1/2). Main frame 6 but he had a non-typical right side, he may make it through the upcoming seasons. He had to take one more step to give me a perfect little chip shot, but no he turned back the way he came in. I stopped him quartering away at only 40yds, but I still missed with the ole smoke-pole. I was driving tacks a few days prior with no scope(it broke), dropped a button buck from the standing, nothing to lean on at 30 yds. Obviously sitting down with elbow on knee wasn't the way for me to go though, lol. Oh well karma is the way I am taking it(was taking it) I figured that just meant I still had the tag for a better more mature buck. Now I have one day to fill my either sex and another antlerless tag. Speaking of which morning is approaching fast I better get to bed.
