I recently read "Hunting Whitetails by the Moon" by Charles Alsheimer. I've never really kept track of deer activity vs the moon phases in the past. Mostly just weather, temps and times. I would like to start a running tally of deer activity from hunters on this site. At the end of the tally I'd like to create a chart based off of the dates mentioned in the book for 2006 to show our results.
I may need some help with these dates but...Occording to the book, the first full moon(pre-rutting moon) after the fall equinox(Sept 23) is supposed to slowly progress deer into the pre-rut phase. That moon would be the 7th of October. Then the 2-3 days prior to second full moon(rutting moon) would when the "chase phase" would slowly progress into the "seeking phase" where the activity will rapidly pick up. That moon would occur on Nov 6th.
If any of you have any knoweldge about this book and/or the phases on the moon as it pertains to hunting, feel free to double check the dates above.
If you can't tell, this book has me thinking. But, I also know that it is only one man's finds which are based on research which I'd like to do a little of myself! To try and weed out some of the "normal" early season activity I would like to start this tally around October 14th(2 Mondays away) and end it on the last day of Novemeber. Does anyone sound interested helping with this?
