Anyone think it was weird that the Wensel brothers had a friend "nudge" deer for them while on stand. I thought that if you were in Iowa and wanted to drive, excuse me "nudge" deer towards someone else who was hunting, that you were supposed to have a licence and tag as well. Just wondering. Any thoughts

If somebody was shed hunting up wind so what? Can't see anything wrong with that.
 
Barry's son had a tag, and the friend was just shed hunting, remember?

Alright. So they are good guys, great guys, good ol' boys. The story was amazing! What I thought was most amazing was how someone would admit to having a non-licenced, tag-less friend assist in a hunt... in published print. Amazing!
 
I agree. You can say whatever you want, that he was shed hunting. But the whole purpose was to push that deer to him. Plain and simple. I have nothing against the wensel's they are great guys.
 
I read the story, it was great as was the buck. I kind of envy the Wensel's being able to base their life around deer and the land they grow them on. I wish I had the tine and $$ to invest into growing an awesome herd. I am kind of green with envy of their life. As for the shed hunting bit, not really much to say except, who looks for sheds that time of year.

After I read it I thought it may come across the wrong way and don't want it to. It was meant as a crack about where I live and that shed hunting during the season would be insane. I don't want to convey the message that they did anything wrong. I'm choosing the 5th on this one. Still.....what a great buck.

I am a long time participant on this site and I truly think it is the best gathering of serious deer hunters and all around good guys that I have ever come across. Virtually everything about this site and all of the participants and moderators is first class in my opinion.

However, I will say this... most people on this site jump on poachers and game violaters HARD when the subject comes up. (I have no problem with that BTW.) There have been numerous posts over the years to this effect. I have noticed though that the bigger the buck, as in world class, the less outspoken people are towards apparent game violations. Some even appear to me to come to the defense of the people involved and appear to frown on any mention that there may have been something amiss.

I will admit to thinking the very same thing when I first read the account of the Wensel buck. That is, the non-licensed friend was enlisted to drive the deer towards the waiting hunter. Hey wait a minute, I thought that was a no no.

Hypothetically... if I, a virtual "no name", did something like that and ended up shooting a let's say 120" buck as a result, would I be guilty of anything in the eyes of the CO that happened to watch the whole episode go down or would I be able to tell the CO that my friend/helper was really mushroom hunting or shed hunting, etc. Forget the CO watching... what would be the reaction of many of the frequent posters on this site if they were asked their opinion? I know what I think it would be.

But if we insert either a high profile "name" or a super top end buck into the story the reaction seems to me to change. In my view, rules are rules and they should be applied evenly to all.

For anyone that would be tempted to start out bashing me because they think I am jealous of that buck or anything, please don't, because I am not. I just think that we should be consistent in our treatment of game violations, regardless of who is involved and how big the animal is. Otherwise, we are hypocrites. One person is a sleazeball and the other is a great guy, etc.
 
Daver, I agree with you 100% on everything that you stated. I, however, think that the members of this site don't want a lot of so called "drama" starting up or false accusations. If it comes down to it and the DNR finds that Mr. Wensel is guilty of anything then we can start the bashing, but I am pretty sure that in this country you are innocent until proven guilty.

Very well worded reply Daver, thanks for bringing your point across correctly. Sureshot summed it up somewhat. We're neither the judge or jury on this site, and although open discussions are greatly welcomed, some posts have a tendency to get blown out of proportion and carried off track from the original post. All we can do as ethical hunters is to try and remain just that and let the law handle the law enforcement issues.

That is a great post Daver. Very crystal clear. I agree 100%. If it is wrong for one person to do it, it is wrong for any other person to do it.
 
Well said Daver. It is obvious that some are hesitant to comment on this topic. Should we hesitate? I don't think so. This is not the first controversial topic discussed on this site. A comment I would like to make regards the post mentioning "innocent until proven guilty." What if you state your own guilt?
What exactly does the Iowa law say with regards to "participating in the hunt?"

On page 5 of the pdf:
Helping Other Hunters
Resident and nonresident deer hunters with a valid deer hunting license many hunt with and assist other deer hunters only in the season specified on their license.
 
The language on helping other hunters does not restrict folks that are not licensed hunters from helping. That may be somewhere else in the regs. May need Clinton to define if a nudge is considered helping. It may very well be that if you get the aforementioned nudge from an intern resulting in the harvest of a woody, and didn't pay for it, that its cool. Either way, I am not throwing my 1980's copy of Hunting Rutting Whitetails away due to a nudge. Hope that little tidbit of information, unecessary to their great whitetail hunting story, does not nudge the current regulations or cause any heartburn for the highly respected Wensel brothers.

Hell of a deer, BTW has anyone seen thier "Primal Dreams" DVD? Makes you proud to be a hunter, blows away most of the stuff on video IMO.
