Need an ATV - UTV

Might look at UTV & if u can do it… HONDA, IMO. We’ve had a LOT of: Polaris, JD Gators & a couple Can Am’s. I can say for a fact, we are done with those 3. I know some have “good luck” with em but a whole lotta machines now- not done well. It’s almost like they designed to go like 5,000 miles & then throw them away.
Like Honda a lot. Dunno about others like yamaha, Kawasaki, etc???
Sorry if offended any owners of above. I’ve been owner too & I personally just feel like they could be building a far better product for that kinda $.

What issues you run into with Polaris Rangers?

I have 4 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 550’s for sale. We also have a 2009 Kabota RTV1100, diesel. The Yamahas do not have tube style receiver hitch’s, just a blade style that you can mount a ball on. The Kabota does have the tube style. We are selling the Yamahas privately but the Kabota is listed on Big Iron right now in Ames.

K- so all of fam combined…. We have probably had 20 of them through out the years. Engines seem to last about 1/4 the amount of time any guys I know with Hondas have. Even buddies with snow mobiles…. Their engines get less than half the miles than I believe the other one they run… I think those are Yamahas?
The belts are needing replaced often. The cv boots are made flimsy & rip constantly - even with guards. Replacing those often. When u shift them- from park to R or F - often grinding like nails on chalkboard. Been through a fair bit of transmissions.

Everything in cab is cheap plastic. A/C went out of both of ones we got with cabs within a year. Dust gets in.

Every Polaris we’ve ever bought (we know they are not cheap!!!) - the tires are about the quality of recycled Elmer’s glue. We take them off day 1 & put good tires on.

When I get into any of the Polaris - let’s say a solid 10++. There’s usually an error code or engine light on. Host of reasons.

With all that said - I’m probably offending 50% of the folks on here. & I am certain many folks have other experiences. I’m just one schmuck with a bit of experience with them. Am I 100% right? NOPE!!!! I personally feel it’s a short life machine built pretty cheap to make huge margins. Almost unanimously I’d say the Honda owners I know say the exact opposite. Very few problems.

I’m almost just done with UTV’s though. Any
Of them. I use my 4Runner with a lift & beefy tires. Doesn’t get stuck. Doesn’t really ever break. 250k miles & I have almost no issues. I paid $4500 for it. My other machine I run for a UTV is a very simple old gator…. The 4x6. 6 tires. Simple engine. No electronics. Easy as pie to fix. Paid $3500 & it gives me no grief. I’d bet a nickel if I bought a brand new gator and ran it along side my old 4x6 - long term the new gator would have more issues. My last 2 cents… for how many problems I’ve seen over the years…. I’m not gonna spend $20 to up to $40k!!!!….. on machines that are built with pretty cheap components. But- one schmo’s experience & im sure there’s a lot of folks with other opinions & experiences & folks a lot smarter than me with machinery so take it for what it’s worth ;).

Well said above on Rangers. Unfortunately, we have one at each farm. Built extremely cheap. Unlike some, we do not even attempt to pull anything like small food plot equipment, hay bales, etc. Since day one we have had to replace wheel bearings, cv boots, axles and seals, tie rod ends, weld cracked frames, belts and many other parts, some annually. Recently, had to put $5500 in it and should have simply wholesaled it out or junked it. The machine is costing me around a dollar a mile for using it, with the operating cost. My wife laughs at me because I am hesitant to ride it in the mud for fear of something going to h....! Never again will I own one! Thinking Can Am or Honda! Any advice on either?

If you don't have the need for utv, and a four wheeler meets your needs, you can get one for half the price of a utv.
Just a FWIW...I have had a regular ATV for years now and often use it to plow snow in the winter around the house. Part of my "justification" in getting an UTV was having the enclosed cab for snow plowing and I am telling you that I LOVED it this winter for that exact reason.

The UTV is a luxury...but it is a dang nice one IMO if it keeps me from getting turned into a snowman while plowing. :) Note - I usually plow 2-4 other driveways in our neighborhood and then sometimes a 1/2 mile of county blacktop if the county plow hasn't been by.

So in the right conditions I could end up with a TON of snow in my lap on the ATV. The UTV...it was a dream. The only problem I had that way was once when the snow was so deep that I had to clear it off of the windshield every 100 yards or so...but that was better than my lap. :)

Don’t get a can am!!!!! We tried that after gators & rangers. Thought - “this is the ticket!” 2 of them- been in for warranty work no less than 5 times each. Likely a bit more. Cabs not sealed. AC went out on both. Both had axles go bad multiple times. Etc etc. NOT the way to go, based on 2 machines at least.

So above says “$1 a mile”. Probably about right. I don’t doubt it. Think of that…. “100,000 miles” for a car- not a huge deal. Shouldn’t be giving much grief with any car. That Polaris is $100,000 to run it 100,000 miles. & id say u about right. We had one with like 5500 miles. It was “end of life” for that machine. I remember saying “wait, it was same price as a nice vehicle. 5,500 Miles & it’s about DUNZO. Any vehicle u buy, 5500 Miles is NOTHING”. Why I just use the 4Runner now with an old school simple gator.

Another vote for Honda i have 3 of them this one being the oldest. My Dad bought new in 1991 so its 32 years old. Its been used like a mule and to my knowledge only thing done to it is regular maintenance. The other 2 i have are 2016 and 2013......no issues.

I’ve had 3 Yamaha ATV & a Yamaha snowmobile. Never had one issue.

I’m actually suprised to hear an ATV breaking down . You guys must use them 10x more than I .

My 2015 Yamaha Viking has less a 1000 miles on it …reliable rig and it’s bigger than a Ranger & Can Am.

This is my “UTV”. I’m shed hunting right now & just snapped pic. I’ll put my old gator up soon. That thing is pretty cool.
4Runner loaded with chainsaws. All stuff for em. Paint gun. Clovers & spreader. Tools, etc etc,

I know firsthand that that 4Runner has been put through the ringer and then some. The thing won’t die. Now if only I could find one for the price you bought yours.
