New Cam

Well, I bought a Scout Guard SG550 and put it out last weekend. If there was ever a week of cold weather to test a cam, this was it! It appears that if performed flawlessly.

This is the first IR cam I have had and I was skeptical about the claims that IR does not spook deer. I had one deer that bedded down in front of the camera for about an hour, with the camera taking 6 shots over that hour.

I left the camera at the factory default settings and I think I'll up the picture resolution from 3M to 5M next card pull.

This shed buck looks like he is trying to figure out what is going on.

I was doing some late antlerless hunting before I pulled my memory cards this morning. From the pics I got between the two cameras, I'm seriously debating going back out hunting. About 50/50 ratio of carrying vs. shed. Couple of the younger bucks that were shed would be awfully hard to positively id at 100 yards. Glad that the forkhorn I saw this morning was at 50 yards! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Great pics Randy! So how is the battery life so far? I'm curious how it will be over a salt lick or corn pile where they would take hundreds of pics over a few days?

I have no idea on how the batteries did. I did not take the remote control to plug in and without that, you really can't tell much about the camera. I hope that I will be good for some time as I put eight 8X AA lithium Engergizers in it last Sunday. I had right at 100 pics this past week in that brutal cold, so that maybe made a dent in the batteries. We will see.

Thanks for the report. I'm interested to see how it holds out in the cold. Whatever the case, the pics look good.

Everyone keeps posting night photos from these cameras and all is fine and dandy. But I'd like to see some daylight photos and see what quality they are.

Anyone??

Here's a couple. These were taken at 3 megapixel not 5.
Scoutguard Daytime Pics

I've got mine set at 5MP and the daytime photos are as good or better than any other 5MP camera I've seen. I got it for Christmas and it has been running since then on the 1st set of batteries.

I just pulled the card on my new sg550 ,looks good so far !
Looks like the IR doesn't bother them.

Can the camera be switched from IR mode to full color night pics? I'm just not a fan of IR pictures and prefer full color.

Also, how quiet are these camera's? In my opinion, its not the flash that usually bothers deer, its the sound that some make. Whether thats just the camera in general or the sound of the flash I suppose depends on the camera.

My experience with wilderness deer is the flash will not bother them if there is no sound involved. Add any sound and game over.

Complete silence in a camera is of paramount importance to me.

I was looking at a Reconyx because it has the IR filtering lense that DOES NOT have the RED GLOW. BUT- it's too darn expensive- $600.
Anyone know if this has red glow or not?
Anyone NOT completely satisfied with these??? I have the $400 cuddebacks and they SUCK for many reasons. One of many reasons is the quality of pictures past 15 feet stinks. These seem good on distance for still having quality pictures???

Those of you who have a Scout Guard, where or whom did you buy them from? I'm in the market for one and was wondering where the best place is for getting one.

I got one for Christmas and my wife got it here- trailcampro.com

They have great customer service. My wife thought she was doing me a favor by getting me a 4GB SD card for it and when I first tried the camera it wouldn't work. I finally figured out it was the card when I read the directions. The camera has a 2GB max capacity. I was also concerned when I could see a small plastic ring moving inside the lens area. I called customer service and they explained that when the camera is off the "lens filter" will move inside the housing. When powered up is resumes its position. Great camera and I love it so far. Let me tell you, if you have been lugging around the large Moultrie cams these little cams are so much easier to pack around. The Scout-guard 550 is only one lb.with the batteries inside! The led's do glow red but not as startling as a flash. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

That is where I got mine and they threw in a 1GB SD card.

I noticed that last weekend when I pulled the card and it freaked me out a little. The pics were ok so I figured I'd check again this week. Good info to know because I was worried and thinking about calling them.

Another question I forgot to ask you Scout Guard owners. How do you mount the camera. It is not real clear on how the unit is mounted. I think I remember Limb talking about using a python cable to mount his. Does it come with a mounting strap or do you guys use a different method?

Skully,
They take up to a 8 GB SD card, I would check the card to make sure it is working. I have a 8 GB in mine and it works great. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

JETHRO,
You can use the strap they add to keep the camera in place then put the cable around the tree and there is a groove for the cable to secure the camera.

I am going to buy 2 more of these cameras I really enjoy them.

Skip,
It is tough to compare a $600 camera to a $200 camera. I would love a Recon but can't really justify leaving 600 in the woods. I would rather have 3 cameras at 3 different locations. And yes the do glow red but the camera is silent. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Adam,
If you ever get one of these cameras I would be interested to hear your feedback on them as many cameras as you have. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

My camera also came with the free 1GB card. But as you know "Bigger is better" so I tried the 4GB. The manual says not to use anything larger than 2GB so I just figured it was the larger card causing problems. When I use the 4GB card the screen on my remote lights up blue but will not post any set-up information. Do you remember what brand of 8GB card you are using Limb? Good info guys, who needs customer service when you got Iowa Whitetail?!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I did have mine freeze up for about half my pictures during the negative 30 stretch a week ago. The camera worked but the IR did not light up the subject. First it would work for half teh 10 second clip, then eventually it quit working altogether when we hit -30+ temps.

I bought my camera months ago and I am still on the first set of batteries.

Randy- your arm is going to fall off if you keep donating. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
