New Slug-gun

I am in the market for a new slug gun. I used to shoot a Mossberg 500 12 gauge but it kicked like a mule so I sold it years ago. Getting back into shotgun hunting.

Which gun would you get and why? Also I am leaning towards going to 20 gauge.
 
Savage 220 without doubt. It is very light, no recoil, amazing trigger and by far the most accurate slug gun I have shot. If your stand hunting or sitting I believe it is one of the best.

If your mainly doing pushing, maybe you would want a semi auto of some sort. The savage 220 is a bolt action.

As another option, my bro-in-law, who is a touch recoil sensitive, shoots a scoped rifled barrel 20 gauge 870 Rem with a Boyd's thumbhole stock. Very accurate and modest felt recoil.

They have Savage 220 & love em. Accurate, awesome. Lower cost.
I have Benelli Super Black eagle slug gun. Accurate as the Savage, IMO. Faster shooting (who cares most would say. I did blast a buck 4 shots in a row even though 1st shot was lethal. Kept running so what the heck & made 3 more good shots in seconds. it was fast & smooth & Fun! Yes, the buck was swiss cheese with 4 entries and 4 exits). DOWNSIDE - I got camo, rifled barrel, sweet scope, great mount, etc. - it wasn't cheap, let's just leave it at that. For someone who is almost entirely a bow hunter, spending that much coin on that gun was silly BUT I'll have it for a long time so what the heck.

Reality, I'd pry go with savage unless you had funds to get a heck of a toy and the Benelli SBE would not leave you disappointed. Kick is minimal, accurate, smooth, fast, etc. So, I guess the only & big down side is the $ part. Savage 220 the way to go if want great gun for reasonable cash. Good luck!
 
h&R ultra slugger 20 GA. round $200.00 if i remember right. Stand hunting I even prefer youth model. 50 yards 3 shots almost one hole on the target. but I am a stand hunter only and all of them are set up for bow.
 
220 is an awesome shooter; the stocks are cheap though and the butt pad is kind of a joke and does nothing to reduce recoil. Mine kicks a lot for a 20 gauge and shooting it next to a .308 magnum it kicked significantly more. I just took off the butt pad and filled the hollow stock with great stuff foam spray and pulled out the little block of styrofoam that they stick in there. Helps reduce noise and stiffen it up a bit. Besides the cheap stocks they have awesome triggers and with the right glass you'll think you're shooting a rifle.

Really it depends on your hunting style though. If you're gonna be on drives a lot then something with a quicker action might be better.

Out of curiosity, do you shoot 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells? I shoot 2 3/4 and I would say the kick is less than my muzzleloader. They have some awesome wood stocks out there now for these guns for $100 I have been thinking about picking up as they look cool. Would really make the stainless I have look nice.
 
I'm shooting 2 3/4 and it's the same with accutip, hornady and winchester sabots. I've been looking for a better stock but I haven't been able to find one yet. Not a big fan of wood but that would be worth a look. Honestly I think a better cushioned butt pad would solve a lot of it, the current one on mine is pretty rigid. Maybe they have changed it since the gun came out. I tried a limb saver pad a guy at bass recommended but it didn't fit perfect so I took it back.

Are you talking about the Boyd's stock?
 
If you're talking about the "thumbhole" Boyd's stock, they really do help reduce felt recoil. I have one on my 12 gauge slug gun as well as my smokeless muzzy. The aforementioned recoil sensitive BIL also has one on his 20 gauge.
