Just recently got permission to hunt 800 acres in Dikinson cty a couple miles from spirit lake what can i expect to find up there. Will it be worth the drive from se iowa.

I guess it depends on how much of that 800 acres is crop,CRP,timber. If it's mostly tillable it won't compare to down south. Otherwise, there are big deer everywhere in Iowa.

SE Iowa is heavily pressured. I think you'll have your best luck up in North West Iowa.

I haven't seen a tree yet that doesn't have a stand in it!

I am quite familiar with Spirit Lake area. If you would want to PM me I can probably tell you a lot about the land you would be hunting.

For the most part it is very open farm country but there are pockets of good whitetail country. I have a friend that does pretty well but he stays along the rivers.

The man told me he was about 2 miles west of spirit lake and less than 1 mile from mn.He also said that he raised 6oo acres of beans and corn.

Decent area, but not much timber. You could expect some outstanding pheasant and waterfowl action in that area, but if it's just deer you're after, you are likely better off in SE Iowa.

West of the lake or west of the town of Spirit Lake.

West of the Lake is very good. West of the town... not so good. On the west side of the lake is a lot of public ground, mostly grassland and potholes.

Like I always say about that country, there is a buck behind every tree. (Both of them)

Your worst day SE will be better than your best day up there!!! It's just not deer country plain and simple....
My $0.02 worth!

The biggest bucks I see every year are in the open ground. Smaller populations with unlimited food, the ones that get old get huge. I am always suprised with what I see running the flats in November.
