I want to get a golden for my daughters birthday coming up, and to use as a shed hunting partner in the future. Does anybody know of any for sale or reccomend a certain breeder?
The best advice I can give is to ask yourself what you expect the dog to do. If you think that you may want it to hunt I would suggest getting your hands on an issue of Gundog magazine and look in the breeder ads in the back. There are usually several breeders of field strain Goldens in there. Unfortunately Goldens became very popular to non-hunters and their genetics went right down the crapper. A field strain will cost some big bucks. If you want a dog as more of a companion you can probably go to a soccer game and ask someone there where they got theirs.
Seriously though I would just start searching online for a breeder, and get in touch with them. Just remember that everyone who has a litter is not a breeder. Make sure that they know about the breed and espeacially about their own dogs. ex: what you can expect of their dog's offspring- if they act like they have no idea move on to the next. A reputable breeder will tell what you need to know, not what you want to know. You don't want to get a pup for your daughter that is going to grow up to be an aggresive maneater.
Good Luck in your search. You picked a great breed, but there are alot of poor quality dogs to sort through.
I can't comment on the shed hunting capability but, you can't get a better dog to be a pet for your daughter than a golden. My experiance is that they are very intelegent and eger to please so will be easy to train.
They are the best family dog there is, you won't find a more loyal dog. If there is one downside to a Golden, it is the amazing amount of fur they shed. I see Golden pups in the Iowa City paper all the time for around 200-400.
Ditto to all that's been said. We've had goldens for the past 19 years and they are fantastic family dogs. Like Breiner11 said, they do shed a lot ... I sometimes wonder how our current dog Gracie can have any hair left for all that we sweep up off the laminate floors. That soft coat also is a burr magnet so you'll probably want to trim up the "feathers" before taking one out in the field.

Like buckets and buckets
Never had a dog like our Golden though...best dog ever. Retrievng fool...that dog will retrieve until he is literally exhausted.
First shot I fired (at a target) I didn't know how he would react...but he charged headlong into the brush looking for whatever I shot!
We finally had ours "shaved" for the summer but they leave a tuft on the end of the tail to protect it...he ended up with the title "Poodle Puppy"
Ours may be unusual...but I don't think he has barked more then twice in the past two years...a "woof" is even rare...but let's us know something is up
I got my golden "Q" from a guy in i think deep river, he dose a great job a breading them for family, but my dog has always been overly gun shy, but with sheds he found 2 dead deer, he did have major flees, but i think that is all breaders
