Off Topic Legislation - Texting & Driving

Really? If one person dies in a hunting accident should we rethink our 2nd amendment rights too?
If we decided it was our constitutional right to use weapons in an unsafe manner; then i would have to say yes. Where does this end? This to me seems to be even more than common sense. I'm all for getting drunk drivers off the roads also! Even with the stiff laws Iowa has on drunk driving; it happens way too often! How bad do you think it would be without laws? I for one would feel much safer on the road with my loved ones; knowing that 18 wheeler coming up from behind me isn't texting his girl freind.

I wouldn't get feeling too safe. If this becomes law it's gonna be awfully difficult to enforce. Just like you said with drunk driving. No matter if there is a law people will still do it, especially for a $30 fine

Ever hear of bluetooth? Mike Rowe can hook you up in a Ford!

Yes, and I have a bluetooth headset. My question was simply why are they not including all of the other electronic distractions in the bill since they all result in the same safety hazards?

Ummmm....murder and suicide?

By the sounds of things, there is an equal danger in drivers taking their eyes of the road, gawking at others and what they are doing.

Last i checked there are laws against both. Not to mention morale, and religious values. What are you so uptight about? Got a girlfriend you have to keep tabs on 24-7? I agree that we have too much governing in our lives. I also want to point out that this didn't just happen over night! If it takes laws to protect us from the careless and stupid; so be it! Sad to say i've seen my share of accidents, and lost too many loved ones to traffic fatalities.

Let me add if you are in an accident, at least in PA, the police incident report asks if a cell phone was present in the car. And of course the records can be retrieved, and are retrieved, to determine if a person was talking, texting, etc. Keep in mind the cell phone can be used to help determine fault, blame, liability, etc.

God forbid your wife, mother, father, son, or daughter ever is killed in a traffic accident. How will you feel when the investigating officer says the other driver was at fault, but good news. He wasn't on drugs or drunk; he just wasn't paying attention to driving.

If that were to happen without a new texting law, this person would walk away with no punishment? Keep your hands at 10 and 2 cedar creek.
So; what is it you are trying to say Thinkin? Spit it out! And i'm sure i don't need driving advice from you! I'm not even sure i care what your'e trying to say!

So they can pull your texting records? For a 30 dollar ticket?

Just to be clear a $30 ticket will be $100.50 after costs and surcharges. So it will hit someone who gets cited in the pocket pretty good. I've been ignoring this thread, but then had to see why it was 3 pages long. I've personally been run off the road 3 times by people messing with their phones, and that's while I've been in a police car.
I'm all for protecting our rights, but last I knew driving was a priviledge-and one that's regulated. If a texting law helps make the roads safer I'm all for it.
