That is a pretty cool looking fish!! I like to go fishing, but I don't like messing with them either. Catch and release for this guy all the way

I eat what I catch. The bigger the better.
No need for pm's muddy. I'll respect your point of view and expect the same.

I love the taste of paddlefish. Of course anything fried is good.!!!

Neat pics.

Kansasdeerslayer, what you might have seen at the Tablerock Dam was Sturgeon.Back in the day my brother and I would snag them down there on the James River. The get over 6ft.long and up to 100lbs.The are a prehistoric looking fish that I think lives 40yrs.I think they are now on the endangered species list down there?

I would have to say that I enjoy trout filets from trout in that 9 to 12 inch range best. Many streams can use a little population reduction. Some are some overpopulated that it stunts/limits the grow potential of all the fish. I enjoy catching large fish, but I choosenot to kill these fish(talking trout here) for a number of reasons.
1. Smaller fish taste better
2. If released they will even be bigger the next time someone is able to catch them.
3. Often times the bigger fish tend to be the primary spawners
4. It makes me feel good.

They key in your harvest is of course knowing what demands your particular watershed can handle. Obviously, some are more delicate than others. Ie....paddlefish vs. a bluegill. Just some things to think about!

Hope everyone is able to wet a line soon. Catch and release Trout Opener in MN opened Sunday....can't wait to get out there.

How big do they get?

I remember as a kid staring over the dam at Tablerock lake in southern MO and seeing fish that looked longer than the pickup that was parked next to the spillway. I was told they were spoonbill.

It is entirely possible that what you saw lurking up near the surface of the water was longnose gar or possibly one of those annoying bighead or silver carp. Most of the time paddlefish are swimming around and rarely stop moving, but anything is possible.

My memory of 20 years ago is poor to say the least, but from what I remember, I saw huge silhuettes of long AND wide fish swimming in the spillway. I remember thinking they resembled dolphins.

Blame it on the acid then.

Blame what on acid, my memory loss, or seeing dolphins swimming in the spillway

?

I wasn't into acid when I was 12 so you must be referring to my inability to remember things now. I don't have too many brain cells left. I have problems remembering what happened 20 minutes ago, let alone 20 years ago

Wow that first fish sure is an ugly critter. The inside of his mouth looks like he swallowed a basketball.

I havn't put a knife to a fish in probably 6 - 7 years, that's my choice

I hear ya' Muddy. I'm the same with Morels. I haven't put a knife to one in some time now. But a fork, now that's a different story.

Muddy, just wondering where your working now. I'm a sophomore at ISU studying fisheries and aquatic sciences, this summer I'll be doing fish and habitat surveys on various instate rivers in a cooperative project with the DNR and ISU. I'm also going to be spending sometime working on the Mississippi helping with a sturgeon study. Needless to say I'm really looking forward to the summer.

Nice fish and eat what you want. I ate paddlefish one time as a buddy went somewhere in ND I believe and had snagged them. It was good.

muddy, correct me if I'm wrong. but I believe that the palid(sp?) sturgeon is also boneless. it does however have an exoskeleton.(sp)
