Peak Breeding 2006

I always figure that peak breeding time will be plus or minus 5 days from Nov. 15th (historically). Things like weather and the moon phase can alter those dates slightly though.

I prefer to hunt before and after since unlike some people (who I won't mention...but just bought a new tiller and has the whole dang fall off to hunt

) I do have to work on occasion

This year a friend says that the rut will be all over by Nov. 7th since the full moon is on the 5th...seems pretty early but he could very well be right.

I try to take the first 10 days off before peak breeding and then a week after.

What do you guys think? I've hunted a long time and I do know the moon phase is a big factor. If we get clear frosty nights the last few days of October and first few of November....it could get going hot and heavy...wish I had a crystal ball...

I have my trip booked for Iowa from Nov 1st-9th for this year.

Full Moon is the 5th. Not saying I always go by the full moon date, but when it coincides with the first week of November my experience is it is time to be in the woods that week.

Hunting similiar time periods in Kansas in 2003 and 2005, myself and another buddy tagged out within days of each also during the first week of Nov as well.

Its a great week to be in the woods. Go get em!

I remember a very fast and furious rut that coincided with a new moon during the first of november. I was set up on a scrape and had 7 different bucks come in during a two hour sit. The most recent time it occurred I didn't have the same experience. While I definitely will be in the woods during the first week of november, I have had good luck that week, with or without the new moon. I do think it can make the rut more intense with more does coming into estrus at the same time. With trail cameras set up on hot scraps I have been able to watch the scrap go from hot to not and back to hot. It helps to know when to hunt the scraps and when to hunt a funnel. I'm trying to track it from year to year and see if it is the same.

Hey now, that sounds familiar, LOL. I've only taken 2 days off this year, one for a funeral, one for a wedding, and both were against my will! Vacation is for DEER SEASON. As is sick leave, comp time, and faking your own death if necessary. My boss doesnt mind since he knows I am completely useless during November anyway. And the tiller ROCKS by the way.

As for the timming of the rut, I dont seem to notice a big difference from year to year. I am not a big believer in the moon phase theory determining the timing of the rut, mostly because I fail to see how that would be biologically important for the deer. Last year seemed pretty slow with the warm temps but really picked up around the 13th with frantic chasing, no doubt those does were hot. I'll let you know what I see this year dble.

I gotta get one of those govt jobs...so I can just hunt all season!

I know the moon affects deer movement, been watching that for a long time...but weather can make or break things during the rut. Guess I'll hope the 10 days I hunt are the right ones!

I don't think it really matters when it is going to be, no matter what, we will all be out there every chance we can get until shotgun season opens. Whether that big boy steps out Oct 1 or Nov 28th that will be the best day to hunt for me
grin.gif
All I know is if someone didn't go hunting any day from oct 25th till Nov 25th just because somebody's theory said it wouldn't be the right time to hunt, would be insane

I agree Liv, I just can't hunt that entire period...or very simply, moon or not, rain or shine...I'd be out there dawn to dark if I could.

In my case though I have to work about a week and 1/2 out of the month of November. Just trying to play the "guessing game" and fine tune my days off.
I'm thinking because of the early moon the last few days of October may be real good. Normally I just take the first 10 days of Nov. off, work a week and then hunt the week before TG.

I remember one year we didn't get a frost until TG and it was in the 80's almost every day...talk about dead!

I have been following Charlie Alsheimer's moon/rut research for a long time and it is very interesting stuff.

Best time to hunt though...is whenever you can!

According to Charles Alsheimer's book "Hunting Whitetails by the Moon" -

2006

**Prime Chase Phase Period - Nov. 2-11

**Breeding Window - Nov.12-25

...past years with similar full moons were 1995 and 1998.

Went to a decent seminar in IL last year about the rut. Can't remember the guys name off the top of my head but he has been studying and hunting the rut for the last 30 years, documenting everything from barometric pressure, temps. moon phases, etc. His conclusion was basically the rut will be the same time every year in your area (at least the peak breeding period). However the number of deer you see during, before, and after this time will vary based upon factors such as the temp. He used last year for example in IA, since we had the scorching hot weather alot of people were not seeing the big bucks during the typical time period, therefore they were saying the rut was slow or had ended, etc. He bascially said when it gets that hot the deer don't move and chase until nightfall when they can stand the heat. Basically, he went on and on and said hunt the same times you would always hunt, try to pick the days when the temps will be cooler (below 50) and before the full moon because the deer will often times go to a more nocturnal lifestyle during the full moon.

Anyway, was an interestin seminar with what I thought was a lot of good points.

I've found that during a full moon in the rut, I see less deer (because they move more at night) but very good numbers of bucks during mid-day (11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)

During this time I try to stay until at least 2-3 p.m. It's amazing the bucks I see at lunch time

Don't even mention warm weather... Clear and frosty!!
