Pheasants or deer

this weekend? Haven't hit the opener for pheasants in nearly 20 years.

Used to love that first morning, cackling roosters exploding skyward.

Now the lure of that big buck draws me to the woods rather then fields.

Anybody skipping deer hunting this weekend to go after the birds?

DNR Pheasant report

Pheasants Forever

Its a ritual with some friends and I to go out chasin' chickens. I'll be hanging the bow up for a couple days.

I will succumb to tradition and chase pheasants in the AM, but look out deer in the afternoon! If things go as planned we should be done early with the roosters anyway, although statewide counts appear to be down, there is nothing like some stripped out standing corn to push on opening day. Not to mention some milo food plots strategcally embedded in CRP fields... should be a few in there.

I used to be an avid pheasant hunter. I couldn't wait for the opener. Now, like Muddy sez, let the pheasant hunters stir the deer up while I'm in a tree.

Pheasant hunters take heart, though. I'm not buying the DNR report about pheasants numbers being down. Maybe the state wide average is off, but I've been seeing/hearing lots of roosters while out bow hunting. When the show flys I'll grab the shotgun.

Blaster watch your back tomorrow! Could be a rain of pellets.

I for one am taking my 12 year old hunting companion (Kacy my dog) out for one last year of opening day pheasant hunting. More than likely it will be a half day hunt but it would crush her not to be able to go. She's got the heart & soul for it just not the body anymore.

I actually have a nice little saturday planned.. gonna do the morning bird hunt ritual then hang up the pellet blaster for the stick thrower in the afternoon.. gonna even get my brother to try and grab some footage of the hunt.. might throw some skeet shooting in.. just not sure if I'll have enough time..

As I've become more into bow hunting the last couple of years and knowing that the bucks are beginning to chase. And after seeing the big boy I saw last Sunday its tougher for me to go rooster hunting. But its been a ritual of my family to go out and camp this weekend. The good thing is my old man and his buddy are getting older and are only wanting to hunt a half day on Sunday. Plus if I didn't take out my 4 year WireHair he may disown me. There are a lot of things that make me happy but I'm not so sure that when I shoot a rooster that he points and then brings it back to me, it isn't a top my list. Its just a very unique bond that hunters have with their dogs.

Please make sure you are hunting safely and have fun.

Unfortunately I have to hunt in SD this weekend going after deer in the morning, cocks in the afternoon, then deer again in the evening. I have to do this crap friday afternoon and then again all day saturday and sunday!

Hello All. I thought this would be a good place for my first post. I have been reading the boards for a long time and recently became a PMA member. This is great site and I recommend it to everyone.

I too will be hanging up the bow for a few days to chase some roosters. I've got two, 3 year old Shorthairs that would also disown me I didn't take them out. If you have never hunted with dogs it is a lot of fun watching them work.

We always seem to jump some nice bucks out of the CRP so if you're in a tree you could get some chased your way.

I'll be back in the tree soon as I have vacation from 11/2 to 11/14.

I look forward to continuing to read more posts and hopefully adding a few of my own.

Like many of you, I used to hunt pheasants and constantly wonder if I shouldn't be in a treestand. Not any more. Middle age (or so) has taught me to just enjoy the time and not worry about what might be happening somewhere else. With that in mind, my 7 year old son and I will be trying to chase up a limit of birds Saturday morning while enjoying the work of my equally aging shorthair. With the weather predicted to be pretty nice, it's likely the afternoon will find us hooking up the boat and searching for a few fall panfish and marking a couple more GPS waypoints for the upcoming icefishing season. This is the definition of a great day, and I won't give a thought to the fact that the great drop tine buck might be chasing does all around my favorite treestand.

Welcome Horn Hunter! I think you will like being a PMA member. And if you could push a couple of bucks out of the CRP my way! I will be sitting in the stand this weekend but can't get out Saturday morning until after the Komen Cancer walk in Des Moines that my wife and I do every year. Good luck to everyone this weekend!

I'll be in DeSoto Bend on a special ML doe hunt this weekend, of couse if I smoke my two does on Saturday, Sunday afternoon could find me blocking for some friends and trying for bird.

I still get a little shiver when I'm sitting in my tree stand at day break...and a rooster cackles his way out of the switchgrass...but only a big buck ghosting thru the trees can make my knees knock!
