Well, the old guy is better if left to hang for a while, then run him through the tenderizer, marinade in your choice of suaces then BBQ. I bet he is still tough as shoe leather though.

As for the round things, no clue.

you are to cut them in slices and peel off or cut the skin or "rind" off. They must be white inside to be good to eat . any discoloration and you should discard them.

Then cook it just like a morel. Egg and flour and fry in a little oil. I have made them and poeple like them but I wasnt too impressed with it.

Suppose to slice in half inch steaks and fry in butter...but this is only in what I'm told, not in practice.

I'm more of the "goatsbeard"/hen of the woods shroomin kind of guy.

Let us know what you figure out.

I tried them last year just like this & they weren't too bad.

One of the most fun things I did last year was when Kratz and I came across about a dozen of them bigger than basketballs. We threw them up into the air and watched them explode when they hit the ground. Typical behavior for a couple of twenty something guys. The ones we found were mushy, they made big noise, it was fun.

I found one last night, brought it home, washed it up, sliced it and fried it in butter. One bite and I threw it all in the trash.

Not my cup of tea. At least I can now say I have tried them.

I ate one once. It was a little dry and I kept sneezing from all the little brown spores that were coming out of it.

I'd bet they would be a blast to shoot with my 22-250 with some ballistic tips.

Your right on. My .243 loves shooting these things off the fence post. Get them while they are still solid before they turn to "puff".

pretty sure i would never eat anything like that.....
YUK!!
im with Muddy and Kratz
Shoot em!!

Actually they are pretty good, not as good as Morels but a lot more mushroom for your money and they come all times of the year.. Slice and skin, if there is any brown pitch it. not poisonous just getting old.. Fry like any other schroom
