purposefully bumping deer...

What do you do (if anything) if you're stuck in the tree while there are several deer around you and it's dark? This has happened to me a couple of times and I'm considering taking a coyote howler along with just so I'm not sitting in the tree still at 7:30. Waiting is the best option, but what if the deer are NOT wanting to leave their evening supper?

Muddy had this happen to me also a couple of times while hunting over a alfalfa field and all I do is just do everything like I would normally do if deer arent there. I even turn on my head light and they just slowly lung off the field into the standing corn. And they are back in the field the next night.

I tried getting down earlier and that spooked them and that stomped and snorted and everything else they do and didnt see them till later in the evening the next day.

I had a real coyote help me out tonight.

Cleared the field about 10 minutes prior to last shooting light.

I had a gimpy 5 pt stickin around yesterday morning. I gave him a snort wheeze. That got him moving, not running but he didn't stick around long. Also this time of year I have found almost all deer spook and run off when I use the can call. Not the little can but the original can. Little can doesn't seem to spook em. That's just my observations. I played with the 5 pter for almost an hour between rattlin, gruntin and little can. Just seem to get his attention for awhile then he would go back to feeding. He didn't go back to feeding mode after the snort wheeze.

Hey Muddy I've tried that before and the deer actually came closer to me. The deer were all young though so maybe they were just curious. That was back when I lived in Missouri though,so who knows, it might work on Iowa deer.

I have done the ole coyote howl before and it seemed to work well. If I have the problem, I just climb down and act Like I don't know they are there. and once I hit the ground I walk immediately out of the area, I dont like to stop or even give them the Idea I might be a threat. It seems like sometimes they just run out about 150-200 yards and watch. Anymore I don't hunt field edges so I haven't been in that situation in awhile.

I've been caught lots of times too. If there's a nice buck in view, I would rather not get down. But once it gets completely dark your not sure whats around anyway. So I just go. They run off for a bit and always return in short time. Something I noticed too is when it's dark and you bump deer from a field say, they run off but not at warp speed. Pop out of the woods in daylight and bump deer from the field an they are moving faster than most fords will go.

Muddy,The coyote howler has worked for me in the past.Something else I have done is have a buddy drive right up close to the stand and pick me up.If thats an option?

Muddy, this happened to me a couple of years ago. I had a 160 10pt and a doe feeding in a field at dark. It was too dark to shoot so i finally got down. they were only 30yrd from my stand by this time. They snorted and ran off. The next morning i went to the same stand, and the same buck chased the doe right by my stand. The only problem was it was still too dark and i couldn't see my pins.

This happened to me a couple of nights ago hunting in the blind. There were three does about 50 yards out and at last light they were still there feeding. I tried everything to get them to go. I barked like a dog, growled, howled, hissed the only thing it did was bring the lead doe closer for inspection. Around 7:30 I gave up and carried on like normal and got out of the blind and still they would not leave. I beelined for the standing corn and then they trotted off. So bascially what I'm saying is I don't know. Can't hurt to try it.

I carry a small slingshot that i picked up at Wal-Mart and a small bag of marbles in my pack. I have carried irregular shaped rocks and gravels but they do not seem to go where I want them to. If they are a long ways off the slingshot will not get the job doen and I try to sneak out of the tree but they usually pick me off.

Only option I really have is to wait until dark and just try to get down normally. I tried barking like a dog, it spooked the deer off a ways, but brought in the neighbors 1000 pound german shephards. Nothing like packing out through CRP when you hear a deep rumbling growl 20 feet away...

I always bark like the hounds...lots of coyote hounds in this country and while deer are used to them, they scurry out of the way when they hear them.

Works every time (no German Shepards around though either

)
