I got a few questions for you turkey experts...:)

1. How many decoys(hens, jakes, toms) do you guys use?
2. Do you have to use scent killer or anything like that?
3. How many and which calls would you say the bare minimum would be for a guy to have?
4. How do you position your decoys?
5. What time do you start using what calls?

As you probably guessed I don't know anything about turkeys, except a guy i know has some that he wants dead:way: I have been following this thread http ://iowawhitetail.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37856 any additional info you can give me would be great!

thanks in advance.

First...no expert so please disregard my responses if that is a criteria :D

1. How many decoys(hens, jakes, toms) do you guys use? 1 jake or strutter and one hen.

2. Do you have to use scent killer or anything like that? If turkeys could smell you would NEVER kill one :D

3. How many and which calls would you say the bare minimum would be for a guy to have? I take a slate and a diaphragm. Thats it.

4. How do you position your decoys? Jake/or Tom at 10 yards, hen at 13-15

5. What time do you start using what calls? About shooting light but right before they drop off the limb to give them an idea unless I am trying to pull one my way in which I'll get more aggressive.

If you can learn to mimic and irritate hens you will kill more birds :way:

I agree with huntyak but sometimes I think I should be wearing scent control with the deer milling in and around the turkeys and me.
Good Luck!

1. How many decoys(hens, jakes, toms) do you guys use?

Depends where I am hunting ie timber or field.

Open field I put out all my dekes(two hens and tom and jake) unless I have birds shying away from my strutter then its the jake and two hens.

If in the timber I put out my jake and two hens or just the two hens. Im afraid of getting shot with the strutter out.

2. Do you have to use scent killer or anything like that?
NO

3. How many and which calls would you say the bare minimum would be for a guy to have?
I carry five pot calls. Two slates, one crystal, one glass, and one aluminum. You never know what they want to hear. But one slate would be the best if I would choose just one.

4. How do you position your decoys?
I possition them from 4-12 yards from the blind I am bow hunting and I like them close. I have the tom or jake four yards from the blind. If you can get movement in your decoys would be a big help. Some guys say they need to face a certain way but I just put mine out. As long as you dont have them so they are walking into a tree or something I dont think it matters that much.

5. What time do you start using what calls?
Usually about shooting light but keep it soft.

I am no pro but this is what I do and it doesnt always work.

1. Save your money... at times they can be fun to hunt over, but you'll kill just as many without.... 2. This made me laugh, but in all reality, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea because I've had deer screw up a turkey hunt because they were smelling me, but you don't have to worry about turks... 3. Learn to use a diaphram and you'll only need one, however, you can get by with none if you really scout hard and study the flocks pattern and be waiting for them when they go by.. 4. N/A. ... 5. I wait til a few minutes b4 flydown time and ill give a couple soft tree yelps to let them know I'm there.. then ill sometimes do a flydown cackle and slap my leg to simulate a wing beat (they love it). Ill call a couple more times after the toms hit the ground and usually by then they've made up their mind if they're coming to me or following a group of live hens.. remember when calling, less is more!

1. 2 hens (1 feeding, 1 upright) and one jake is what I use. I combine the feeding hen with the strutting 360 and jake with lifeline avian x 360. If your gun hunting you really don't need decoys.

2. NO.

3. I carry 4 slate calls, but my best one is a the Hs. Strut black widow. I honestly don't know why I bring so many, it is about the only call I use.

4. I put the jake 6 yards directly in front of the blind. I put one hen to the left of the blind and the other to the right as if they were walking past the blind.

5. What airassault said for number 5. I use a hat to slap my leg though if I am close. I usually set up in the middle of fields so I dont do any of that. Just sit and wait.
