Raising Deer

Land of the Whitetail
I was watching the Outdoor Channel the other day and they had an interesting show on. There is this place where they have pen raised deer. What they do is try to find genetic lines so that they can breed deer specifically to have certain features, i.e. droptines, non-typicals, mass, typicals. I was thinking it was pretty neat until I learned they are doing this so then people can come down and purchase a deer for their own farms. Once someone buys one they bring it to their farm or wherever they hunt and realease it. They can buy a deer at anytime. What is stopping someone from doing this and then shooting it and having a big Boone and Crockett deer for the books? I don't know all the details, but I think stuff like this needs to come to an end. It is ruining hunting. What are some of your views?

If somebody raises a monster buck i would bet somebody has seen it. If the buyer thought he was going to get some sorta recorded by pretending it was wild, shooting it, and thinking hes going to get famous hes going to get caught. He could probably make just as much money selling the fawns from the deer. IMO I really don't think this is a problem.

I don't feel it's ruining hunting unless you let it. For me hunting is much much more than that and if such a thing does indeed happen then those people have lost the idea of what hunting should truly be about. Hunting is already ruined for them if such a thing is even remotely considered. It'd be a shame if it happens,..but it's not ruining how I personally feel about hunting.

This past March when I was at the Dixie Deer Classic, 2/3's of the booths were selling high fence hunts.
It is becoming a problem because this is what Joe Public see's and hears, then stereotypes all of us.

Like SaskGuy said...it is all about what you want to take away from the hunt. There is a fence operation near here, and there are a lot of people who enjoy that kind of hunt. Not for me, but to each his own I guess.

Not for me, but to each his own I guess.

Yup.

Also, I think that Safari Club International recognizes these deer so those people have a book to enter them in. Even if they do enter them in B&C or P&Y, I really don't care because I have no desire to enter a deer in any record book.

Being in "the book" doesnt mean anything to anyone unless you have your name in the top few of some list. Then maybe the rack is worth $$, but is it worth it, the person bought the rack in the first place.

I have dealt with the sale of deer across state lines as I have had to test them for Brucellosis, Tuberculosis, and ensure proper ID with tattoos and bangle tags. They also have to have a CWD monitoring tag so they know where the deer came from. Annual samples/tests are to be doe if they wish to keep their herd CWD certified free status. I cannot speak for all states on this but this is what I have dealt with in Iowa and IL and the states in which I have shipped the deer. My point being, if this is occuring, they have a legal means of doing so like a high fence operation or they are an illegal under the fence operation that will get in trouble in the future
