So today I was working at farm seeding clover, found a couple dink sheds, all is well. I drive over the hill and someone is walking through the prairie. I stopped him- he asked if I owned the place, said he got seperated from his buddy who had permission on a place but he was now lost. So I directed him to the nearest fenceline. I wasn't a prick about it but I didn't buy his story. I told him that if he crossed a fence and he didn't know the area- he was probably tresspassing. Wasn't up for a big scene, he left but I was still ticked off. Later I thought I should have driven around and found his license plate. What else should I have done or what would you do?

Ohh Yeah, that trespasser. I think you did the right thing. Now if it happens again thats another story.
 
I would have shown him a pic of your avatar and asked him if this was your wife and someone was hitting on her in front of you what would you do? Then I would have told him you feel the same way he does about his wife about trespassers on your place.

As I understand it, as a landowner, you can demand that they show identification. If they don't, it is another offense that you can tack on to trespassing when the sheriff shows up. I always demand identification telling them that if they don't provide it, it will add to their charges; seems to increase compliance. See: Showing license to officer, bottom right of page 12 Regs Maybe I'm reading too much into this? After I get an ID, I tell them to expect a visit from the sheriff as I let them go. I know it leaves an impression, as this fall I talked to a friend of a guy I caught ten years ago. They both still remember the incident!
 
Do you own this? Means that I am trespassing and haven't got a clue, please take mercy on me.

My friend has permission on so and so's property.... Another line used by trespassers, hoping that the stupidity act will prevent you from pressing charges.

I talked to farmer Smith who owns..... Another common lie trespassers use.

My dog ran off and I'm looking for him....

I wounded ______ (insert animal here)and I'm looking for it (most times carrying a weapon, which is against the regs).

I've heard these and more that escape memory.


Pharmer, my advice is to make an example out of every chance you get. Show them you mean business or sell that piece of ground. They are already cutting your fences and trespassing, what else can they do?

I'd have called the Sheriff, no two ways about it. If he didn't like it, tough and if he decided he didn't want to stick around I'd make damn sure he did one way or another

I know you guys are right. Should have called the sheriff. Been kicking myself since but I was a little nervous about the confrontation.
 
Well I gotta say he has some balls, If he didn't run like H E double hockey sticks then maybe he didn't know where he was, but like you said, he knew when he crossed a fence that most likely he was in the wrong place.

If it were my place, I don't think I would get bent out of shape on the first offense, but if I caught the guy again, then I would be calling the law.

Pharmer I know exactly how you feel, I hate confronations also...so I have both the Sheriff and CO's # in my cell phone. It is very intimidating to a trespasser when you hit the quick dial on your cell and tell them to send a deputy or CO out...pronto! Believe me...word gets around!! Otherwise they'll just walk all over you

I'd grill his as-. I'm sure this guy has been on your place serval times, thats why he was back. Just happened you ran into him this time.I ran into two guys driving mine to a large group. Had everything from hay burnt to grain bins shot up from this bunch. I see one guy from this bunch on mine they are talking jail or what I can make stick.

Find yourself a local Sheriff's Deputy who likes to hunt and give him permission to do a little hunting every year. I've seen that work wonders.
 
I agree with liv4rut. Either he was a very good liar or he really was lost..... If you catch him again, whole new ballgame. I would definitely call the law... but to come right off as a total jerk can make an impression on others as well..... but a negative one
 
No tolerance here!!!!! Some say that it might be his first offense. Yeah, right, first offense that you know of!!!!! Also, last I checked, it is their responsibility to know where they have permission and where the boundaries are. I’m not paying a mortgage and taxes to provide public access. Prosecute them every chance you get, build a reputation as a prick and the problems will diminish. You might have a few retaliation episodes, but it won’t last.
 
They seem to get really upset when you rush up to them and snap a close up photo of their mug before you ever say a word. It also comes in very handy down the road with whatever you decide to do with them.

You bet it is. From the last time I caught someone, the sherriff issues the citation. Then, I had to go up to the sheriff's office to sign papers for them to continue prosecution. So you have up until this point to back down.

Think about someone entering your house. Do they get a freebie? Trespassing is trespassing, irregardless of how many times you catch someone.
