A recent upgrade of Microsoft Outlook has started sending some email I receive directly to a junk email folder. Sometimes I delete these items without even looking at what is in there, but since some of the PM notifications from IowaWhitetail wind up in there, I will sometimes open it.

Well, this morning there was an email from an outfitter whose name I will omit. I found their view of statistics rather humorous:
[ QUOTE ]
(outfitters name removed) boasts of some of the highest success rates in the nation, for trophy whitetail under fair chase conditions. The 2006 success rates for obtaining a shot at a record book buck at less than 30 yards were as follows: (Success rates exceeding 100% simply indicates we had more opportunities to shoot trophy bucks than hunters in camp.)

* Archery Non-Rut 82%
* Archery Rut 167%
* 1st gun 145%
* 2nd Gun 136%
* Late Muzzeloader 95%

[/ QUOTE ]

So using this line of reasoning, congratulations to everyone for having 100% success this year whether you went out or not. I would put this in the category of "counting chicks before they were hatched". I guess it is all how you measure "success".

hmmmm
i see the irony here
so if i didnt buy any tag this year at all, and sat at home and ate doritos, then i could consider my season a 100% success.....
cool
ill have to try that, i like chips

I received the same email. Actually those numbers are pretty pathetic for Iowa if you count success like he does.

I didn't shoot a buck this year in Iowa but using his system I was somewhere around 1200% successful.

So every time I see a 125 class buck within 30 yards it is 100% success? Dang I've had at least a couple thousand percent some years.

To be fair to the outfitters, many of them post success rates based on opportunity because the true reflection of the job they are doing is how many opportunities hunters have at game. Kill success rates depend a lot on the hunters ability which we all know can be lacking, especially on some of these guided hunts.

I'd sure love to hunt where some of you guys are passing on 20 or more P&Y bucks in a season. Maybe you should be outfitting yourselves if you have that many trophy bucks.

this was supposed to be somthing to laugh at......
NOT CAUSE A RUCKUS......it was enjoyable up till now
thanks

Using their name would be advertising for them and really was irrelevant to the theme of the post. I just had issues with their view of statistics. Now if they had said their hunters enjoyed a 147% increase in harvest over the previous year, I could go along with that. Stating that they had success without hunters in camp just rang hollow to me.

i was actually thinking that putting their name out there would make them look stupid. like they are liars, that will twist and turn their story to sell a hunt and make a buck.

"well, since the majority of our hunters are morons, and never do any off season practice, we can't actually use harvest percentages. we have to make up categories, to make the people that buy our hunts look competent"
