I accidentally nicked the gut when I feild dressed my little button buck this past weekend. I got a good look at the stomach contents and it got me to wondering what he had been eating.

Anybody want to post some pictures of the stomach contents and and help me to identify what could be what type of food?

Next deer I get I will be sure to get photos of this.
 
My Dad and I do this alot. We gut them out and load the deer up into the 4X4 or ATV. Then we'll take the stomach and cut it open to see what they're eating. Depending on the area, and how soon before they were eating, I've seen whole kernels of corn, acorns, etc... Helps to know what they're after....
 
The last one I checked was full of corn and "green stuff" that could only have been my rye and oats.

The nearest corn was a 1/2 mile away and not a tree in sight so they were hitting at night and sneaking back home in the early morning daylight... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
 
You fellas have stronger stomachs than me. I make sure I use extra caution around the gutbag. When I do slip up and stick one I go into a gaging convulsion....LOL Everyone around me seems to get a big kick out of it though.

I've never done a "close" inspection because I do not know how to tell the difference between chewed up browse and say, alfalfa. Plus, deer take a bite of this, take a step, take a bite of that, take a step. The stomach is a cornucopia of everything in the area.

Corn does stand out though, and about every deer has had some in it's belly, even without corn in the immediate vicinity (as Dbltree notes).

See these are the times when not having a sence of smell comes in real handy.
 
Ok, I finally had time to check out the stomach contents for this doe I shot this morning.

First Lets start off with the stomach, cut open in all its mixed up goodness...

I then took the contents and washed them around in hot water, and separated out the big bits into what you see here. Ok, correct me if I am wrong, here's what I think this is:
A - Leaves, and the rest looks like apple skins
B - Acorns
C - Leaves of a Arborvidae Bush (evergreen)
D - Locust Pod
E - Corn
F - Beans from Inside the Locust Pod

You are kind of a "hands on" type of guy arent you Greg. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif I always checked catfish stomachs for hints on what they are biting on. Check my deers contents every once in a while but never thought of rinsing the crap off in my wife's spaggetti strainer and sifting through it like those guys on Gold Fever. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif Interesting none the less. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Yeah I am definately hands on kinda guy, and a visual learner, thus all the pics. Ive only been deer hunting for 3 years, and I would like to think that I have moved up a bit on the learning curve.

Im also a programmer, so working with data is in my nature.
Maybe the DNR needs to have me collect data for them /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

One interesting fact about finding corn in the deers stomach. There is no corn fields around here for miles, there is however a pile of corn in the neighbors front yard /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif So it gives me a good idea of where these deer are moving. Maybe the neighbors could put out corn that was dyed a certain color and then we could see which houses the deer were eating from.. LOL.
