Well i have come to the conclusion that i am a bad turkey hunter! 5 Years and no bird... If i dont shoot a turkey during the 4th season, i am just going to be done turkey hunting all together. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe it is because i started on my own and just never got the hang of it. I dont know, but i am done after 4th season if i dont get a bird.

Are you shotgunning or bowhunting? Took me about quite awhile to get one with the gun, and when I switched to bow it took 5 years before I killed one. Patience and persistance.

I shot birds my first 3 seasons. I've gone 3 in a row now without putting one down. I think this hunting comes down to plain old dumb luck sometimes...and outfoxing the other guys trying to kill birds in the same neighborhood. Don't quit, it's a rush when you get your first one.

Aw, you don't need to quit. I learned how all on my own too. Trust me, when you get a turkey (or deer) after teaching yourself everything, you really feel like you've accomplished something and I think you develop a deeper appreciation for the hunt.

Just enjoy your time out there hunting. Success will follow.

No need to quit. Like Muddy said patience and persistence. I went two years when I first started with no bird. Go with someone that is a seasoned turkey hunter. You will learn a lot and with confidence comes success. Keep your chin up and good luck!!

I turkey hunted 2 years before I had a "successful" hunt calling in a big tom for my dad, we had a lot of close calls before that but couldn't connect or passed on jakes. It took me 3 years before I took my first birds and I got 2 jakes in one year, mostly luck and being in the right spot at the right time! This year I didn't have one bird answer my call the one day I got to hunt, I am still scouting out some birds for 4th season and hope to connect on one of those.

I think what makes turkey hunting so frustrating for me anyway is that I watch all these guys do it on TV and DVDs and they make it look so easy and I get all pumped up and think it is going to happen opening morning but then I get out and realize that IT IS TOUGH!! I just try to make the best of it and have a blast being out in the woods with my family and friends! Don't give up, turkey hunting is one of the funnest sports out there, and one of the most challenging!! Good luck, you'll conncect on one before you know it!

I think the main thing is i need to find some new property to hunt! Way to many people just walk around on this property because it boarders a golf course. I dont know, hopefully my luck will change 4th season, during second season i never saw a bird! Anyone know of any spots around clinton county that have some turkeys on them?

Hang in there! Last year I called my son's first turkey right off the roost and it was all over in 15 minutes....this year he's finding out reality is a whole lot tougher. If those toms have hens with them it's pretty tough! Helps if you can pattern them a little....be where they want to go when they fly down. It's much easier if you can intercept them rather then try to call them away from where they are headed.
The outdoors in spring is a wonderful place to be no matter if you bring in a turkey. Keep trying and I wish luck!

^lol^. I dont know what disease it is, but i dont like it!

As many have said, don't give up! If for no other reason, it's great to be able to go hunting in the spring and while it can be frustrating, it can also be a lot of fun. The first two years, I hunted on my own without success, then the final day of 4th season that second year, I went with a friend and we doubled. Got one the next year too, then went 0-2 on birds that I should have had. Last year, I finally connected on a bird that was all mine ... required an hour-long stalk because he wouldn't budge from his strutting zone.
I guess that's why I like turkey hunting even better that deer hunting because you never know what's going to happen.

Good luck and hang in there!!

I agree with ya man I hate all turkeys right now. Dbltree is right try and pattern them. I'm having all kinds of trouble getting them away from those damn hens. Stick with it... Good Luck

PS I've yet to kill a turk myself. Should've sealed the deal yesterday with a big ol' tom but he decided to not follow the hens and came right at me. NO BLIND + BOW = spooked turkey

If it was easy everyone would do it and there wouldnt be such a great flock that we have today in so many parts of our state

Hang in there, IAbowhunter18. Every turkey I have taken thus far was sheer luck, ambushing them by being in the right place at the right time. Now I'm trying to do it "right" (calling, decoys and blinds). I might go back to luck!

NAH!!

...I too am a self taught turkey chaser...I would be quite embarassed to tell how many years and seasons it took to finally connect on a bird - the learning curve is pretty steep!...something to remember is that success rate in Iowa is generally around 40% (bow is only 2%)- pretty low when you consider success rates for deer are 70% (35-40% for bow)...stick with it and by all means look for new grounds to hunt - it can help...also in my opinion 2nd season can one of the toughest of the 4 seasons to hunt...the toms are often well henned-up and its the first big flush of hunters into the woods...a few hunters chasing them in the same area can spook the birds pretty good for a few days...4th season has been my favorite season to hunt the last several years...especially in the mid to late morning as the toms lose hens to the nest and they start getting lonely and horny again...keep at it and then send us the photos when all the parts come together!...

Took me six years. Don't give up. Sooner or later things will click. Today was my first. I'm also self taught and was having those same thoughts.
