Tags need to go

Please contact your legislators. We are on this but this is abuse of our system & will get solved if/when this is pointed out to the legislators by informed hunters (you!!!!). This is a pure slap in the face of the everyday person waiting 5-6 years to hunt here & RESIDENTS with no access. We have celebs still promoting our state & a quick glance over Youtube, FB, IG & ticktock…. Well over 1 million views & impressions like they usually are for celeb tags. Promoting our deer hunting on best of best farms, skipping the line as a celeb while our draw heads towards a decade & residents are hemorrhaging access left & right. Millions of views promoting iowa- this has to go!!!!! YOU will make it disappear. It’s tee’d up and we are gonna knock this out. Need help from YOU. When done, when bill in place- facts laid out, they continue to hear from folks…., we win. As in, like, this is probably the most obvious thing out there, literally 99% of people on both sides laugh in disgust when they know the facts. Complete wipe out of this program if we communicate simple facts here
1) contact legislators.
2) contact them big league when the bill then hits to get rid of this complete sham. Gov tags need to go. I’d bet that Drury’s don’t even buy them. The comments make it sound like MW just had to buy the hunting license and not the tag.

Something I also noticed is they appear to swap out guns in the different pics. The gun in the middle photo above, with 2 guys/deer, isn’t the same one they show in the instagram clip. The one above is all black and doesn’t even look like a ML profile. I can’t even see a ramrod on it. Maybe one of you guys with better eyes than me can tell. In the instagram clip there is a Nitrofire laying on the deer, definitely not what he’s holding in the pic above.

After looking some more, I’m seeing 3 different deer. The one from last year is a clean 10, then look at the other pics from this year. The instagram clip shows a bunch of junk around the bases but the pic with the black gun doesn’t have the junk. What am I missing?

He got to hunt Iowa 2 years in a row so far…

Do any other states have a program like this?
NO!!! Not states that have a significant draw time at least. This program is a LARGE PART (not all but a big chunk) of how we went from a 0-1 year draw time to 5-6 years. With many MILLIONS of views each year on top shelf farm hunted by celebs from this program…. We will head towards a 10 year draw. We went to 5-6 in only about 15 years. All the while - our residents are losing access a consistent pace & our public is hit harder every year. We cannot sustain this trajectory!!! The advertising of our deer hunting by celebs that jump the line needs to stop.
*in all fairness - I’ve helped folks get these tags in the past. I helped them write their essays on how many people they reached. They all laughed at how crazy this program is. I totally get it - so do folks getting the tags. They need to go NOW!

Skip, what is your view on selling a very small number of these tags(5-10) and using the proceeds to buy more public land? I'm betting some guys would pay $50-100k for a tag. I have no dog in the fight and do not like these tags, but it could go toward something positive. I know they go to charity now but if they used it for more public land it could be an option?

Absolutely fine!!! 1) that doesn’t do what this program does…. Offer a regular priced tag to PROMOTE our deer hunting to the largest audience!!! 2) the funds are far excessive of normal price & would be “for a worthy cause”. It’s solving a problem in your example vs causing one in the other.

Any government program has to be able to justify itself. Celeb tags cannot. On the other hand… auction tags for charity groups… absolutely fantastic!!! High priced, all the funds go to dnr & charity to advance an approved benefit to iowa. No one has any issue (minor if so) with tags for charity or wounded vets or other causes like that. Using the funds for more public access is something I’ve discussed with legislators & that’s common sense huge merit behind that without the problems celeb tags & promotion create.

Does anyone know how many Government Tags are issued each year?

IA does need this false advertising - it really isn't reality for 95% of the state and that 5% is locked up highly managed land. I talk to people while traveling for work who drool over me being from IA... they dream of coming here to hunt... moving here to own a house and 20 acres and shoot giants every year. They don't believe me that it isn't all it is cracked up to be. Don't believe what you see on YouTube. I laugh even more when they're excited cause they're going to hunt the western side of the state cause it only takes much less points to draw and no points for gun... I tell them good luck, the good days are gone and not likely to return until something changes.

It would be nice if they took these tags and made super raffle tags with them, I don’t like the idea of auctioning them off because only super wealthy guys will get them like they already do with the other auction tags. Could still generate a lot of money with the raffle tags and the average guy could buy a few and still have a chance at getting a tag

Usually you can draw shotgun and muzzleloader any sex tags with 1 preference point but I’m guessing now that the nonresident doe tag loophole has been closed the amount of hunters applying for those seasons are gonna get more pressure as well. Time will tell. I know our group is going to start having one person put in every year for a shotgun anysex tag. EHD definitely took care of shooting extra does this year on the farms. One of our food plots that normally have 40 or 50 deer in it had 4. Smh

FYI: He bought a regular tag this year (like everyone else). Last year he had a special tag, purchase for tens of thousands of dollars. Not guessing about this BTW. Ill leave it at that.

I would 100% agree that the media tags need to go away (the ones they hand out for promotion). The governors tags that get auctioned off by organizations like PF for raising money for conservation are a good thing, in my opinion.
