Tags need to go

Gov tags need to go. I’d bet that Drury’s don’t even buy them. The comments make it sound like MW just had to buy the hunting license and not the tag.

Something I also noticed is they appear to swap out guns in the different pics. The gun in the middle photo above, with 2 guys/deer, isn’t the same one they show in the instagram clip. The one above is all black and doesn’t even look like a ML profile. I can’t even see a ramrod on it. Maybe one of you guys with better eyes than me can tell. In the instagram clip there is a Nitrofire laying on the deer, definitely not what he’s holding in the pic above.

After looking some more, I’m seeing 3 different deer. The one from last year is a clean 10, then look at the other pics from this year. The instagram clip shows a bunch of junk around the bases but the pic with the black gun doesn’t have the junk. What am I missing?
He’s killed 3 bucks in the last 3 years, 1 in Missouri with a rifle and 2 in Iowa with muzzleloader I believe.

14 celeb tags for promotion of our state. Helping write many of these essays at end…. That’s very likely 14 million++++ views to folks across country promoting the state of iowa on the top 1% of farms. That’s a HUGE marketing campaign.
I have no issue with tags going to highest bidder if the funds go to charitable & conservation groups. We want the most $ for them & by definition… Traveling to iowa to shoot a buck is a LUXARY, not a necessity!!! We want the most funds going to the best causes with no promotion expectations behind it. Auction tags are great. Celeb tags are wrong.

Anybody watch the most recent Midwest Whitetail episode where Mike’s Daughter (under the age of 16) killed her 3rd buck of the season. During the video she also proceeds to tell the audience that she has a “landowner” tag in her pocket too. She kills her 3rd buck and dad pulls it into the corn with hopes of another “hitlister” showing up so she can fill her “landowner” tag.

Guys complaining about a celebrity paying quite a bit money to come to Iowa and hunt for 2 days and kill 1 buck all while guys like Mike gobble up every single parcel they can to keep guys from hunting “their Fencerow” all while their 13 year old daughter is shooting 4 bucks in one season. The hunting world has lost their minds………

I'm to the point that " if I see a youth" going (hunting), I shut it off.
Enclosed blinds, ear muffs, dad's doing everything but pulling the trigger...
Yeah, sick of it!!!

What age did you start deer hunting and what year was that?

Back when I started in the '70's, most deer hunting was deer drives. Yeah, there were a couple of stands that a kid might have been able to sit in, but they sure weren't going to be drivers.

Totally different game these days, but I still struggle with how old a kid should be so that they grasp that they are taking a life. I'm sure it varies from one to the next.

I am not from Iowa, so no “say” in the matter. But that is not right ! 3-4 bucks in a year for one hunter ?

Sure hope that changes soon !

Well after I thought about it- she could have gotten youth, archery, late muzzy, and a landowner- however if she got the landowner antlered, her dad can’t unless they are breaking some major laws like signing her up as a tenant for example and dad as the landowner (not saying that’s the actual case here- but an example) and another reason why landowners should ONLY be the person on the deed.
Or- another thought- one person registered one parcel and another registered another parcel? Yikes.

They probably have a parcel or parcels in different names and claim to operate them as seperate farm units. Idk how you could ever police that. If done legitimately, it's legal.

Bad thing, there’s more guys abusing this than people think. We sit here and complain about non residents and celebrities and whoever else someone deems worthy of “ruining” Iowa’s deer herd. When in reality it’s guys like Mike who are just as much to blame. Guys have become “overnight” deer biologist, land managers, professional hunters, and our deer herd is In the worst shape overall it’s ever been. Wild how all that goes hand and hand. Guy leaves 10 acres of standing grain and pulls every deer in for miles in some of these areas; then deems the Bill Winke 1-1 buck to doe ratio is the best and then these land owners unleash all hell on the 100 deer hitting these standing grain not realizing the does in those plots have come from miles to use their food source. Throw in EHD, other illness, vehicle collisions and the amount of deer killed year after year would pry blow all of our minds.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s some guys who have made some fantastic hunting proprieties and done right by the herd; but majority of them should leave it up to Mother Nature. Iowa was great 50 years ago and it would have been good for another 50 years after had humans not F****D it up………..

I’m not sure if you guys feel this way but if I shoot a nice buck during the season my motivation to hunt a lot after that dwindles!
Exactly. My cwd county is now unlimited buck tags. I've had 2 landowner tags since the 90s. The last time I shot 2 bucks in 1 year was '01. I have only 1 place to hunt though, 1 county. If I travelled, I'm sure I'd try to bag a 2nd buck.

Same here. Hell, I don't even NEED to kill a good buck every year.
Those days are long gone.
In the past 5 years, I've given up hunting several thousand acres of prime acres. The vast majority I had sole permission.
Felt awesome to aquire it but felt guilty deep down that I was doing it for ONE REASON, GREED.
I've even went so far to tell the landowners I'll be done hunting there and to " please" let others hunt.
I aguired about 1400 acres of Superb riverbottom (bout 4 miles) this past summer with a phone call. Sole permission.
Never sat it once.

Can't say I would do that if I was trying to make a living videoing hunts?

Mn is a party hunting state and I've had some super fun years killing 10/15 deer when younger.
Have emptied my quiver 2 times while making late season deer drives.:)

And yeah, killed 5 or 6 on both.:p

We DID have WAY to many deer back then.

Damn, drank 2 beers posting this.
Where were we?
Lol.

Parceling out the farm has been going on for years. Mom, Dad, and each kid get a LOT tag then turn around and get tags for shotgun season. A family of 4 could max out with 12 tags if they all did archery also.

Seems that a youth LOT would be easy to verify. All proceeds would have to go to an account in their name and not the “family” account. And how involved are they in making the “everyday” decisions on how it’s run.

Regardless, the issue is resources to investigate and enforce the regulations. We’re already strained just trying to follow up with violations as it is.

Much respect for Winke. Have learned a lot watching him over the years and he seems like a solid dude. But I sure don’t agree w him on his philosophy on does/deer density. His old farm had a ton of deer and he was killing Mega giants. EHD hit that farm, far less deer, and he had nowhere near the high end bucks for the next handful of years (with less deer). Now he has a farm with even less overall numbers, quite low seemingly, and has very poor hunting (relative to what he had at old farm). So sure seems to me this whole experiment of less deer equals bigger deer is complete bs and despite the overwhelming evidence most of the hunting industry is still subscribing to it. Drives me nuts.
