The gales of November...

Paul, great words and pictures. I really appreciate your perspective on hunting and life in general. You are living the good life.

We have some more rain and yes...you guessed it, WIND due in today and Friday but then...

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Saturday: Scattered snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 32. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

It looks awesome! Steady weather will make for some great November hunting for mature whitetails!

Movement times should be miday however the grey, overcast November skies and chilly wet weather will have them moving at all times.

Feeding Times are just that, they reflect only when animals might be more inclined to feed based on the moon.

During the rut however you can throw all of that out the window. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

It's not over, it's not just starting, it's happening...and if your not in the woods your missing it! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

One hot doe...that's all it takes! One year I had a little ole doe lead 15 bucks by me like a puppy on a string! I've never seen anything like it! Right when they were supposedly "locked" down and I should expect to see little or nothing.

The only way you'll see nothing is if you don't go...... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Amazing words...definitely the highlight and calming point of my day...

The lunar feeding times indicated that movement should have been 10:30 to 2:00 on the 13th and I took note that at 2:00 the neighbors alfalfa field filled up with deer.

My wife had me busy doing "honey-do's" but I managed to slip away to a nearby stand.

At 3:30 does began feeding in a cut soybean field

Deerincutsoys.jpg

Activity increased as did the winds as an approaching front begain to threaten rain.

A fawn appeared and feasted on blackberry leaves (another reason to fertlize a patch near your stands... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif )

EatingBlackberries.jpg

Deer moved randomly through out the evening including a buck perhaps 400 yards away heading for parts unknown at 4:30.

A doe and fawn fed nearby but it was to thick for a shot. They fed into a little point of woods but bounded away as a bobcat padded into their domain. Figures I had just put the cam away because of the rain... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

They kept moving right up until dark including several small bucks that milled around under my stand.

EveningBuck.jpg

This morning it was a different story with neither hide nor hair of a deer to be seen...if you don't include the huge buck outside my kitchen window at 5:00 a.m.!!

He nibbled on a mugo pine and then ambled away into the darkness. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Everywhere I looked I could see standing corn from my stand...

CorninBack.jpg

most certainly it has an effect as it creates huge amounts of cover that normally are not there.

So...it was quiet, but how can we spend time in this wonderful outdoors without enjoying it even when there isn't a deer in sight?

Always something beautiful...

Cardinal.jpg

and the promise of the next trip that might bring...the one, the one we've waited for all season!

Don't be discouraged because you didn't see as many or no deer, you can see it changes daily. The bucks I saw weren't locked down and they were traveling, searching, so it's not "over".

If your able to hunt tonight and this weekend, I would be sure to be in your stand from mid-day until dark if you cannot hunt all day.

They will be moving early and for every buck you see in "lock down" there is another "in search of", so never say die!

Good luck to all this weekend! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Good stuff -- those gales have invaded SE Kansas too this year. A couple days last week, I thought I was back in Dodge City again!

Awsome post Paul. I can tell from your writing that what you say comes from the heart. It be said before your living right. love your outlook. Man love prime time had some of my best hunts on cloudy overcast days. But I can do without the wind.Good hunting to all.

Whew! Seems like the winds never cease this November...until this morning which dawned frosty and still /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Glad I'm strapped to each tree cause I'm afraid I'm going to be catapulted into the next county sometimes! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Saturday morning was cold, windy and quiet...too quiet, with a big ole full moon staring back at me.

FullMoon11-15.jpg

I saw a few does way off in the timber but otherwise it was just like Friday morning...quiet. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

I had to leave at 11:30 and saw deer feeding on the way home including a buck and doe both feeding in an alfalfa field, pretty much as the feeding time predict.

Night time things heat up and I've been challenging myself by getting in their bedroom on the ...ground.

An older frined of mine who no longer can climb stands consistantly kills several deer each year from the ground but it is a challenge and not without some frustrations.

I use a small lite foldup chair and tuck it back into cedars and shigle oak

GroundHunt.jpg

Qucikly nip off whatever I need to clear a shooting lane...preferably as far away as possible (25 yards)

ShootingLane.jpg

I should have known however that the main runway was a doe trail to feed and that the faint cross path might be used by traveling bucks. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

I didn't have long to wait when a beautiful white rack appeared through the cedars and came literally right at me. I moved to follow his movements and he busted me at 10 feet away.

We stared at each other through a red cedar until he decide it wasn't safe and headed for parts unknown.

I looked around and noticed a rub only feet away...doah! Not to smart! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Rub.jpg

It was fun however and the cedars sounded like a "pen full of pigs" as bucks moved through grunting.

Tree stands are my favorite of course but there are no trees for a stand here and many is the place like this one. My whole farm is one big cedar patch and so it seems senseless not to learn to hunt these areas from the ground.

Like my 70 something friend, many cannot hunt from a stand and even lugging a tent may not be feasable.

Just be sure to tuck yourself back into thick cover that will allow a deer to walk by without seeing you unless he turns his head 90 degrees.

Had I not moved the buck I saw would have walked right by and a little more research would have shown the runway he used.

You can scarcely see my foldup chair...

Chair.jpg

Give ground hunting a try sometime...you might be surprised!

Few more days of November gales...then it looks better /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

If you've already harvested a buck this season, then this is a great time to try some new spots and put some does in the freezer.

I put up a new stand yesterday afternoon and hunted it last evening and was surprised when a herd of does and fawns filed by!

DSC00021.jpg

The only problem was that I didn't get enouh "junk" trimmed...

DSC00022.jpg

Sooo close but hey...better to find out on some baldies then a buck of a lifetime!

DSC00023.jpg

Gonna work on that problem today....

Last year my first mature buck TC pics came from Nov 14th thru the 18th so I checked my cams yesterdy (11-16) and guess what....

DSC00375.jpg

They came out of the woodwork! Same time same place despite the moon, the weather, the corn and all that "guessin" that always goes on.

The big boys are always the last to show and the ones on my cams have never been seen before now.

So...I'd sure hate to be working this morning...or this week for that matter!

Hit the brush if you can and hunt safe!

Movement is gradually swinging back around to more normal early morning/late evening movment but I still see some activity mid-day as well.

Barely daylight when I caught a large group of does and fawns slipping away from crop fields along a pasture fence line. They just barely show up in this pic.

HorizinDeer.jpg

A friend of mine suspected that a little runway through a piece a nuthin' corner was being used almost soley by bucks and sure enough when he sat there he saw nothing but. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I decided to see for myself with another "ground sit" from a chair he had hidden...can you see it?

Chair-1.jpg

The first deer out was a a wary old doe who snuck around me but about 9:00 a beautiful buck stepped out but turned and crossed the pasture...

Buckwalkin.jpg

It's amazing what you can get away with by just tucking back into a tanglement and...watching...

HidinSpot.jpg

Later I decided to check out the runway...just a faint one but bucks are using it to skirt the perimeter and check for hot does.

Backway.jpg

I found a perfect little bottle neck/funnel and a killer spot for a tree stand.

Runway.jpg

So much to be learned this time of year especially when one can experiment a little to prepare for next season.

My camera didn't do it justice but it was a beautiful sunset last night

11-17Sunset.jpg

19 degrees this morning but looks like we have a warmup tomorrow and an ever changing wind pattern this week. Great reason to rotate to different stands and see what's cookin'! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Dang..it was cold yesterday morning! Layer on enough clothes however and one can stay quite comfy in the stand.

Quiet, is something we haven't heard much of this November but it certainly was. Then...I hear the crunch, crunch, crunch....stop...in the shadows of the cedars. wondering what it is, fawn, doe or Muy Grande!

Dang fawns anyway... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Another pretty sunrise for sure...

BrilliantSunrise.jpg

I saw several bucks locked down with does yesterday while on a trip to town but that's been going on for 10 days now.

Interesting how few does a buck actually breeds each year. Does are in heat for 24-48 hours tying a buck up for 3 days much of the time.

Divide a 10 day period of peak breeding and you can see that any given buck breeds very few does in a season. Most bucks may only breed a dozen or more does in their lifetime which makes the prospect of passing on genetics to a large number of deer pretty poor.

Except for a couple fawns I orphaned...all I saw were empty fields...

Farawayfield.jpg

So a buck gets thru with a doe now...he's going to have to do some searching to find another receptive doe. That means hoofing it across some country and possibly by my stand, so I never give up and I don't worry if I haven't seen a mature buck in my area.

Collared bucks have been known to travel up to 25 miles during the rut so anything is possible.

I never get tired of waiting because I feel like I'm on top of the world looking out over God's creation...

Seeforever.jpg

They're combining corn like crazy this week.......

DSC04935.jpg

Changes things, narrows down the cover they have, changes their feeding patterns and opens up new possibles at stands that may have previously not seen much action.

The gales have subsided, for now...but things can still get crazy in the woods, so keep your eyes open, The big boys are moving now..... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Yesterday was an action filled day starting with another nice sunrise.

Sunrise11-19.jpg

First thing in the morning a group of does filed through, honestly more then I could count as they filed by.

Doe3.jpg

Doe4.jpg

A 100 grain Muzzy zipped through a shoulder, the heart and out the otherside of this one.

Still made a 100 yard dash to a...

ditch.....

11-19Doe.jpg

Late afternoon a noticed 3/4 of a mile away a big deer rolling across the fields and at 3:45 he showed up under my stand.

345Buck.jpg

Buck1.jpg

He came in on the downwind side but I was up high and the "gales" were carrying my scent over top...almost. He caught just enough to be curious and cautious.

Buck2.jpg

Buck3.jpg

Buck4.jpg

Eventually he kept "cruisin"...checking for one more doe.

Then a little fella showed up...

YoungBuck.jpg

YB1.jpg

This doe so him and headed the opposite direction!

LoneDoe.jpg

It sure was windy again but didn't seem to bother the deer, they have an agenda and nothing is going to stand in their way.

Supposed to be 14 tomorrow morning...but hopefully minus the wind!

Just a little update for those still hunting...

This morning on my way to hunt, every field was loaded with deer! I nearly pasted a nice 10 point when we "met" at the crest of a hill! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

The previous pictures were from a stand I just put up in what is a near perfect bottleneck. All runways funnel in within yards of my stand.

Plenty light enough to shoot this morning when two does came in and stood literally under my stand. Low light didn't allow for a very good pic and I opted not to take one because I had a feeling a buck would be coming through as well.

Doe1-1.jpg

After it got lighter more does filed by in a pasture

Doe2-1.jpg

Despite the gusting winds I heard something "thrashing" and looked up the runway to see a huge buck with a "junk pile" on top!

I swear he looked like a unicorn with a third antler! I've never used my LOT tag on a buck before but I thought...there's a first time for everything!

He was headed straight to me and based on the does path, he was mine! I had him mounted and already showin' em off when barely 25 yards away he suddenly jumped the fence and headed cross country!

Dang..talk about exciting! Now that's what November's all about! It's not over by a long shot as I saw 5 more bucks, all traveling, searching and looking. No chasing and does have regrouped and are using more normal feeding patterns.

I did get a pic of this young buck as he went by...

Buck1-1.jpg

I suspect I'll never see that big boy again but I am confident I'll see others there and perhaps it will be tomorrow.... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

BTW...all movement was early from before daylight until 8:30 a.m. and then it ended abruptly...interesting.

Take a look at the feeding times for today... Feeding Times

That is interesting...my buddies said the exact same thing yesterday...8:30 it was over like a shot in the dark. Does herded back up and hitting food sources. Bucks cruising in the evening looking for does on food sources.

Great stuff Paul
