Thoughts on Earn-A-Buck (EAB)

Just wanted some thoughts on if Iowa should have an Earn-A-Buck Program for bow (possibly shotgun too???). A hunter could get the same tags now (statewide, doe...) and more. A hunter would have to shoot 4-5 does first and then be eligible for a second statewide tag and so on. Just wanted some thoughts.

Interesting concept - do any other states do anything like this now?

Since you would not get penalized on not getting your first statewide tag I think some people would attempt to earn the 2nd tag.

Just wonder the logistics enforcing it - would we have to have check stations to verify the number of antlerless taken?

I would support the concept however I feel that it requires to much "red tape" and the DNR is not going any route that costs money rather then increase revenue.
The most simple cost effective way for them to increase antlerless kill is make the first day of shotgun "does only". It costs nothing, people still buy tags and hunt knowing they can hunt bucks later in the week.
Because of the huge access problem I feel the antlerless problem will only grow worse and the DNR will continue to do everything possible to force hunters to shoot does during the times when the most hunters are afield. Opening day of shotgun season is the perfect time to start this trend. In time perhaps more "antlerless only" days will be added.

No to EAB.

Does only on opening day? I go out and police my place to make sure the neighbors stay on their side of the fence. Let them hunt and push the deer around. My spot is a little sanctuary and on day two, I will be there and so will the deer.

No to EAB and "antlerless only" days. Like stated previously this would require to much red tape to be inacted statewide and the doe only days would push alot of deer into sanctuaries. Reducing doe license fees or including doe tags with an increased fee any sex tag is my best answer.

I agree with Central Iowa! Make the tags more available to those willing to fill them. Give one with each either sex tag and $12 per doe beyond that!

Give one with each any-sex tag? Great Idea ~ but realistically you have got to be kidding. The DNR would lose out on $27 for every doe shot. We will never see it happen in Iowa.

That same concept Bowman and CI mentioned works out very well for Illinois. Every BOW tag in that state includes tags for 2 deer. One says either sex, the other says antlerless. They are unlimited in the number you can buy. (You are only allowed 2 bucks in IL regardless of tags possessed...this includes landowner tags, bow tags, gun tags and ML tags.....2 bucks max per year per hunter) The cost there is $26 for bow tags. Here in IA, the DNR will not lose out on the money if the folks never buy the tag and it is lost opportunity for the DNR to reach the goal of population reduction.

Me personally, I know I would be harder on the does in my area if the antlerless tags were dirt cheap but I would also pay more if needed to get an either sex tag.

My thoughts on earn a buck....great idea but you would have to implement check stations for accountability which I doubt would happen. If no check stations, how would the DNR determine who is eligible for a buck tag and when?????

I like MO. 4 points or more on one side of the rack. and if you want more does gone, have more doe tags out there (by the way i got a 8 point today

Earn a buck

Hunterman, I have to earn a doe in Early Muzzleloader and Bow seasons by shooting does in both seasons first in the area I Hunt and this can be challenging as alot of guys just give up because of the unfilled doe tag but boy when you get that doe its like killing a trophy buck and then when you kill that bruiser you look back at how you earned it and it makes it that much more memerable. I think all of the extra doe seasons is a big issue and that in areas that I hunt the does are harvested by big shotgun groups and youth in fact I saw one buck to every doe this year on average in all seasons. Earn a Buck could weed some guys out!

Re: Earn a buck

B&C...ammunition plant is a unique setup...I am assuming that is what you are talking about
