These trees are just in my yard but some great lessons to be learned with them. This was my first time doing maples, sugar maples to be exact. They grow like a weed and they’ve been in the ground three years now and this will be year four. I’ve had some die back on some of them each year and I think I figured out why. These trees send up so many sprouts from the side of their main trunk the tube was filling with green growth and now hardening odd before winter like it should. Thus portions of the trees were dying each winter. I’ve never had this be a big issue in any oaks I’ve planted but maples were a different story. I ended up cutting open all my tubes and cleaning out old leaves and trimming any growth in the tubes. Should’ve solved that issue. It’s always something when it comes to using tree tubes but they’re still the best option IMO for growing trees!
