Tree Planting

Got 720 red cedar plugs from Chief River Nursery in today. I was expecting a much larger box but they pack them in there well. Looking forward to planting these tmrw and likely thinning them in 30yrs! Haha

These trees are just in my yard but some great lessons to be learned with them. This was my first time doing maples, sugar maples to be exact. They grow like a weed and they’ve been in the ground three years now and this will be year four. I’ve had some die back on some of them each year and I think I figured out why. These trees send up so many sprouts from the side of their main trunk the tube was filling with green growth and not hardening off before winter like it should. Thus portions of the trees were dying each winter. I’ve never had this be a big issue in any oaks I’ve planted but maples were a different story. I ended up cutting open all my tubes and cleaning out old leaves and trimming any growth in the tubes. Should’ve solved that issue. It’s always something when it comes to using tree tubes but they’re still the best option IMO for growing trees!

Looking good! Nice straight rows... wont be long before you can string out some suction tube and start a maple syrup operation. ;)

For sure! I’m looking forward to squirrel hunting over those acorn and hickory nuts with the kids some day! Maybe even get some of those dang deer that love to tear up the trees in the fall.

What tree tubes are you using.

Thanks I was looking at the blue protex ones from forestry suppliers. 48" for 2.95 best price I've seen them at so far

This may be the crown jewel though! Ozark Chinquapin planted last fall as a nut. This is a VERY well drained, upland site with great soil.

This site with the serviceberry, chestnut, chinquapin, and dcos also grows northern red oaks extremely well. This tree was an acorn 10 years ago and is pushing 15’ tall already.

The soil here looks/smells rich and even after a 3” rain, water never sits in any holes I’ve dug to check drainage.
