Using a real fan

I'm going to use my turkey fan from last year on a decoy. Do you guys that already use one use it full fan? I have it in the freezer.
One more thing when you set it do you just pin it, salt it until its dry?

I don't know where or if you can buy them outright but I know that the Primos B-Mobile has a neat little gadget that comes with their decoy that is made to be used for real fans. You actually pull the main tail feather out and glue them in a bracket that has enough holes for each tail feather. Then instead of transporting a full fan, it folds over itself about 3 or 4 times to make it about 1 1/2 -2 inches wide. Here's what it looks like...(2 item down and click on "enlarge" link above the image to get a better idea)Fan

If anyone knows where a guy can buy one....post a link. I'd like to get one of those for my Pretty Boy.

Perfect Thanks

I just bought a B-Mobile and will be using an old jake fan. I think the way this goes together you could use a mature tom fan and just trim the quills so you get a fan that looks like a jake.

Thaw your fan and be sure to remove any meat that was left. Coat all fleshy areas with Borax, "or salt". Spread it out on your work bench and use some small nails to hold it open. Let it sit for a few days then use a wire brush to remove preservative. I always coat the preserved areas with Elmer's glue to make it more sturdy and keep the bugs out. Good luck!

Is the wingnut deal a pain in the butt? I can't find any picks of it on the net.

I think they would be a pain if you set them up everytime. I would leave the fan connected while transporting or moving.

I'd be afraid of losing the wingnut while setting up in the dark... not to mention in even medium length grass during the day.

B-Mobile from Primos is way easiser to carry than pretty boy and girl....and it is cheaper
i would use a jake fan, in hopes to not scare off any subdominate toms.....
i guess jakes can be mean also, but
thats what i would do.....
good luck

Using a real fan, you don't have to take the wingnut off each time- the fan holder deal slips between the decoy and a washer- you do have to crank the nut tight though. Yeah- I'm sure that will be the first thing I lose this year.

I watched the Double Bull instuctional video that came with my Matrix last night and they recommend NEVER using a jake decoy bacause it scares off the toms. I personally have never had a tom come in when I had a jake deek out, but I rarely use one. Usually just one or two hen decoys. What has been everyone elses experience with jake decoys?

I always use a full turkey fan. Turkey hunting really isn't any different than deer hunting to me. I want the biggest baddest Tom out on the block that is looking to kick some A$$ to come into my spread

The only difference between deer hunting and turkey hunting is, what separates a big tom from a little tom, is about 1.5-2 inches of beard lenth, a 1/4to 1/2 inch of spurs, and 3-5 lbs in weight

never thought of it that way... might be taking the saws all to my jake fan and re glueing it tonite.

That is very interesting...I have never seen mature toms back away from jakes or not come into my jake decoy.

I have had them attack my jake decoy and try to trounce the daylights out of it

I've never killed a jake so I plan on using a full fan but it would be interesting to see what would happen if one had one of each and how they reacted.

Always something new I never thought of on here.........

We watched 3 jakes kick the crap out of a tom a couple of years ago. I never would of thought that would happen.

I have always used jake decoys with out the fans and have always had toms run in and have had to replace a few decoys because the toms tore the sh**t out of them.
