Hmmm - in that first link I-35 was closed this morning when I looked at it - now travel is just "not advised" - would this be progress?

Yes...according to this article:

Interstate 35 reopened but travel still not advised

it looks like routes from the south east and east, one could travel at your own risk.

From the west....forget it

Like Skully...I'm going to drive my 4wd...nice and slow.

Roads are ice/snow covered and low visibilties between here and DM but not impassable like they are to the west and SW.

My wife is determined that we are going...hell or high water...so I'm going to say a little prayer that the good Lord will watch over us despite our ignorance

Aaaaarrrrgggggghhh

I swear I'm moving.... If I had a job lined up in New Mexico or southern Colorado that paid decent I'd be gone from here, there are other animals to hunt.

The first time in three years I don't have a gig the same weekend as the classic and I can't make it due to the interstates being closed.

Hmmm - what to do in the morning...will be a tough call if the report is still the same. Normally Des Moines is about 5 hours from my house going 75/80....I don't know if I'm up for a 6/7+ hour drive if the roads are still snow/ice covered which they probably will be. AAAAGH! Why couldn't this have come next weekend AFTER the Classic!!!!! If we come, we'll be just like you guys - 4WD, tow strap, shovels, and some weight in the back. What is wrong with us?

drove from ames to the classic today... 40 minute drive took about an hour and 40. ran into a massive drift 4 feet deep and probably 100 yards long with 5 or more cars stuck in it on R38 a couple miles south of slater. the road was completely blocked off and we had to turn around and take a different road. managed to help 2 people that drove a chevy malibu into the drift... took them to polk city to wait for help. they said every tow service was too busy to help. we came back by there tonight and every car was still stuck in the middle of the road and completely drifted in. ive never seen the roads like this.

Does anyone know what I-80 is like from Atlantic to Des Moines?

How about I-35 from Highway 2 up to Des Moines?

Wife and I were coming down from MN today, turned around and headed back before we even hit the Iowa border.

Passing lane was a mess, you could not pass, basically one long line of cars, and about every other mile there was a fresh car in the ditch with the people inside sitting there helpless. We decided the next 160 miles to Des Moines were going to be a long one if the conditions continued to deteriorate the father south we got and it wasn't worth the risk. Guess there's next year.
