Why should we cater to the lowest denominator?

Folks,

I think its interesting that nearly every state DNR caters to the lowest denominator. They set their license fees as low as possible in order to sell as many hunting & fishing licenses as possible.

As a result, your avid hunter/fisher buys a license (of course), but so does the occasional, "weekend," & "once every other year" hunter/fisher.

These "marginal" hunters/fishers don't do anything to support hunting & fishing other than to buy a license. They are not avid & they are not passionate.

On the contrary, nearly everyone on this website is likely both avid & passionate.

I have learned over the years that the avid & passionate are willing to pay a lot more for their passions. Obviously, no one wants to pay more for anything! But if the payment means better hunting/fishing, less intrusion by other hunters/fishers, etc., etc., they are usually willing to pay more money versus quit hunting/fishing.

I have long suggested that state DNR's STOP catering to the lowest denominator. Instead, they should increase license fees so that they finally have the budget necessary to buy more public land & provide better hunting/fishing. Who really cares if the lowest common denominator stops hunting/fishing?

This is starting to get kind of fun.

I think that the prices at the movie theater should be raised to about $50 a ticket. That way you would keep out the low lifes like me that only go about once a year anyway. Then the diehards could sit anywhere they wanted to and enjoy their $20 bag of popcorn.

You know what I think is hilarious?

He says he's an IBA member......Just think Orion, your $20 is helping fund our lobbyist, who helps us stop people like you...... Perhaps you'd like to be a Texas Rep and get us some more members

By the way, see my signature at the very bottom of my post? I think all of us at IW should consider future posts - we're only fueling his fire......

Welcome to the site. Thanks for all of the posts today. I'm not sure what the motives and agenda are but this sure has been a busy weekend for this time of the year. I'm sure all will be revealed in due time.

Supply and demand. Pehaps sell them to the highest bidder. Too bad for the normal Joe hunter.

Kansasdeerslayer,

Thanks for proving my point... here it is a Saturday afternoon & you are sitting in front of your computer typing about DEER & DEER HUNTING!

Obviously you are both avid & passionate when it comes to deer & hunting!

My point is that if we start to see deer as potential sources of income, instead of what they are now seen by most of the public... "road blocking maggots," & "rats." They will be managed better resulting in better deer & better deer hunting.

I think the only point I proved was how ridiculous this thread is.

Our state DNR's set prices to give as many people as possible the opportunity to become complete addicts as many of us here are. You would do good in the short term with your way of thinking, but the next generation comes along and can't afford to get introduced to the addiction and then you are out of a job, my friend.

Why don't you tell us where you think hunting would be today without affordable license fees and free access down through the years.

Those are the two single most important factors for why we have so many outdoorsmen in this day and age. Also the reason the hunting industry is thriving!

Those "marginal" hunters/fishers you speak of took ME hunting and fishing when I was a kid! Without them I might not be the same person and I bet many other members here can say the same.

I agree!!! Non resident licenses should be $10,000.00. That is unless you shoot a 200 inch deer, then it should be $20,000.00.

I do ... my grandfather fell into this gutter classification you have given some hunters. He was not wealthy but had a passion for hunting that I will always respect. He taught me a great deal about wildlife and the outdoors but he also had to put food on the table to feed his family. You imply that because he did not have the income some did, he should not have had the opportunity to hunt ... which means I would not have had the opportunity to hunt with him.

To restrict someones right to hunt based on their economic status is a road we don't want to go down ... and I know things are headed that way with land prices, leasing, etc., but you appear to want economic class restrictions on hunting today.

I am one of the lucky ones that has purchased my own property and spend a great deal of my time, income, and energy on the sport I am passionate about ... so perhaps you would think it is ok if I get to hunt and I could make your elite list ... but your comments and ideas really disgust me.

At one time I had some respect for you and enjoyed reading about the managment activities on your property in Iowa. Hopefully you will rethink your position on this issue and focus your energy on something positive before the damage is done.

What? Iowa has the highest resident fees that I know of. Missouri is pretty freakin cheap, Arkansas is cheap, Kentucky is cheap, and so on. When I fist moved here I couldn't believe that a deer tag was 27 dollars for ONE. Wow raise the price, I would have to sell my bow and gun just to get a tag.

The future of hunting is already at jeopardy. Without the upcoming sons & daughters of the avid/passionate sportsmen & sportswomen including the ("lowest common denominators") it will be nothing.

This thread says alot about the man who started it.....and then to go and post another one stating bowhunters are selfish.
