Wyoming Tag

Got lucky and drew a Wyoming deer tag again this year....hopefully I don't miss a hog again like last year!
Last two weeks in September can't get here soon enough.

Yeah, we applied together. Should be a good time. Hopefully we get some decent weather....anything under highs in the 80's would be spectacular.

Tell me about the deer there? How big was the one you missed last year?
Do they have giants there?
Does it seem like it's mostly 120-140" deer?
what do they top out at- like a giant buck there is 160" for example???
See tons of deer?

Any other details, type of terrain, hunting conditions?

Really curious. Sweet trip I am sure!

Terrain varies from mountains to desert, depending on what you want to hunt. Mulies and whitetails are out there.
Hunting conditions in the mountains are nice, down below its usually ridiculously hot with tons of mosquitos. The bow season is only the month of September, so its pretty short.
We have a couple ranchers that let us hunt, public land hunting can get busy depending on where you go.
There's good bucks out there but they aren't a dime a dozen by any means. The one I missed last year was a straight up 8pt whitetail that was around 24" inside, tons of mass, and had 12"+ tines and huge brows. Biggest 8 I've ever seen in my life. But like you said, lots of smaller bucks. They get hammered in the gun season where we hunt.

Good luck man! UGHHHHHHHHh.....the itch is already here! I'm jealous you'll be chasing them before us! Best of luck and kill a PIG!

At the risk of causing an uproar, what did those tags cost everyone, and do you feel it is outrageously high like some are saying our NR deer tags are? And to tie in another thread, what will you do the last couple of days of your hunt , kill a small buck or doe or just eat the tag? I am just curious how you look at being NR hunters in Wyoming? Congratulations on drawing tags and enjoy every minute of your hunts!

Don't remember exactly but its somewhere around $300.
I always say I'll shoot a doe the last day for some meat but then I always keep telling myself that the big boy is gonna walk out just before dark, so I either shoot a good buck or end up going home empty handed. Its worth it just for the experience to be out there hunting with my dad. I don't need to kill something for the trip to be a success.

I don't think I could shoot a doe out there compared to these awesome corn fed does out here in IA!! :)

Bowmaker,

I just got my tag in the mail yesterday. I'm pretty excited to be going. The tag was $326. I'm not really in the hunt for a trophy. This will be my 1st out of state hunting experience so I really don't know what to expect when I get there. Its a self guided hunt on public ground so I'm hoping to run into a hog, but I don't think I am going to be very picky when it comes to the horns. I just want to get one to try the meat. We have to shoot antlered only so I probably will pass on smaller bucks the 1st couple of days in hopes for the giant, but like I said I'm not going to be too picky.

Good honest answers, thanks. I don't know where you will be hunting but get prepared. Climbing some of those hills with out much oxygen is tough, even for youngen's. Have fun and send us some pictures.

I've been out there the last few years hunting. I just take it easy when I'm up in the mountains. Gotta enjoy that scenery anyways!

Me and 2 buddies are going out in October, around the 14th or so to chase muley's around Lander on public ground. Not sure what expect yet but we will be hunting at lower elevation's.I have hunted them once on a high country hunt in Coloradao but never in Wyoming and not at lower elavation.
Anyway good luck to you guy's,hope you get a couple giant's and hope to see some hunt pic's.Wish I could get my dad to hunt but he's not a hunter, just a fisherman.

I think we are hunting in Region J, which is the medicine bow national park area. If anyone has hunted around there any helpful hints would be much appreciated. I think we are also going out there on the 14th. I am definitely ready to go and have a great time. I think I better start getting into a little better shape.
