OK, i was on my way home from work last night. I work second shift so it was about 11:30. I was headed down the highway and there was 2 semi's stopped in the left lane and a car on the shoulder, well the roads were really icy so i stopped to make sure everything was all right. I went to the guy in the car and his car was messed up BAD, i said what is going on. He said go look under that first semi. I was thinking OH MY GOD there is going to be a car under that thing and it is going to be bad. Well it was a little different, underneth of the semi was a big old COW!!! Some how the cow got on the highway and the car hit it, then the semi comes along and ran it over and it was stuck under the semi. I just walked back to the car and asked if the guy was alright he said yeah. That had to be the craziest thing i have ever seen. I couldn't believe it i just got back in my truck and couldn't help but laugh.

Okay, I'll try to hijack this thread.

My mother in law, sister in law and her children were coming east on Highway 30. They had been to Ames and were returning to Iowa City. They were following a semi in the MIL's car, she was driving. The semi in front of them hit a Russian boar, since it was at night and the boar was dark, the MIL couldn't see it very well in the dark. She runs it over and since it was about a 500 pound hog, it sent her Honda Accord airborne. They did a 180 in the air and landed backwards on the shoulder just in time to take out a mailbox. The boar took out the radiator, so they had to be towed to Marshalltown. Nobody was hurt, just a little freaked out. How many people can say they have hit a wild boar in Iowa? I think it was an escapee from Hindegartners.

Highjack complete. I know the area JNR and have a buddy that hunts that area. In fact someone shot 1 or 2 the other night. I have heard that there origin was from the same location you stated. 500lbs is a HUGE hog.

Re: Your not going to believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the insurance companies need to do something about this Livestock problem. I suggest that we issue more out of state Livestock licenses. In fact the State Fair grounds area of east Des Moines is TEAMing with them right now. Something should be done.

Re: Your not going to believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last time I was in Guthrie County, I guess the cattle are free rangeing out there, I guess they think they are in the west. We Saw 15 cattle on the roads. Was thinkin bout hittin one for some beef for the freezer.

Re: Your not going to believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There have been several hogs killed in that area East of LeGrand. 10 that I aware of. A farmer had about 20 in his pasture two weeks ago sizes varied. It won't take long and that could become a problem there.

So does a person call the CO and ask for a salvage tag?

I'm pretty sure the owner of the animal can be held liable in cases like this, if you can find/prove who's it is.

Re: Your not going to believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost lost one of our phone reps to this same thing. Hit a black angus in the middle of the night going down a county highway, flipped the car ass over elbows. Didn't get too hurt but killed the cow and totaled the car. The farmer had to pay for everything.

My Dad always told me..."never let the truth stand in the way of a good story"

Speaking of open range...driving down a small blacktop road in Wyoming after dark, all of a sudden a black angus cow apprears in the headlights...literally! The squealing tires didn't seem to faze her and she sauntered off...while I was wondering if I had any clean underwear in the truck.....

Re: Your not going to believe this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of "you won't believe this" and in keeping with the hijacking theme...

Several years ago I was driving north on I35 and we were approximately an hour south of Des Moines when I saw an OSTRICH in the ditch running along parallel to the road about 50 yards off the shoulder. No joke! I assumed the thing escaped from some nearby game farm or something, but I laughed and laughed thinking what someone would think or say if they hit an ostrich in Iowa. There was no mistaking that it was an ostrich and it was fully daylight at the time, but I wouldn't want that thing jumping in front of my car after dark, you would probably clip it off at the knees and end up with the whole thing coming through the windshield.

This cow didn't happen to be up in the Clinton area did it? Because I heard there was one laying on the side of the road up there on friday.

haha that is hilarious about the ostrich becuz we had one that got loose from some guy by our school. were you on 65/69 by any chance? me and my buddies chased it with our cars on the gravel road.

Renobber - It has been long enough ago now that I really don't remember other than being in the northbound lane of I35 heading up to Des Moines. It was quite a sight!

The accident was on Hwy 30 just west of Clinton near the Mill Creek Parkway. The cow was cited for a moooving violation.
