Friend's of Iowa didn't go away!

I can't prove it but I think the IDNR sells/gives our names to various groups. My 13 year old son has received a few items since drawing a tag last year. Why would the FOI and a couple of outfitters send him a post card? Had to be the IDNR.

    New black powder substitute

Not all 50 cal. barrels are manufactured to the same specifications. T/C’s (.500) tend to be “tighter” than Knight’s (.502). A thousand of an inch can make a big difference in how easy or hard a particular sabot loads. Here is a good link with lots of ML information...

    Switchgrass

If you had to guess, and I know spring was late this year. But on average, at what date has switch developed 4 or 5 leaves? July 1st? 15th? Tim

    Help me name my dog

My current lasb is named Scout, my 10 year old daughter picked it out. My last lab was named Denali. She was about 90 pounds so the name fit her perfect.

    HSB 764 Discussion

I think the CO's are really pushing for the 180 days becasue their hands are tied right now. It's pretty easy to claim residence and the CO's can't do much about it. I was talking to the CO that lives up the road from us a couple weeks ago and he's really hoping it gets changed to 180 days...

    black lab pups

Wannabe, if you like the reds and you don't want a fat American lab bred for show do a search on the internet for British Labradors. You'll find some great labs that are very athletic compared to your typical American lab. I got mine from Wicklewood last year. Couldn't be happier and worth...

Hunting lobby- NR and NR landowners

According to the CO I talked to this fall, the NR archery antlerless only tag is history. The DNR is doing away with them next year.

    It's December, what's working??

My corn didn't do very well this year but it's hard to beat corn this time of the year. Last Sunday evening I had 12 bucks come into my turnip plot. The deer love the turnips this time of the year. They were still eating the leaves as well as the bulbs. I watched one buck pull three plants...

    CRP MCM Requirement

You probably should have explored your options a little more before signing the contract. I would call and ask them if you can do a fire burn instead. Or you could mix a lot native grass seed in with the clover seed. At least in my area, the people at the NRCS seem to be really flexible...

    IA DNR Forestry programs

We haven't had much luck planting trees; the deer destroy most everything. Our Cedars are the only trees that have survived. Our last planting was 90% cedars and it looks great. You would be surprised how fast they can take out 2000 spruce trees. But we have a lot of deer in southern Iowa...

    Buying land

There is cheap ground out there, usually sold through an auction. I know of some that went for $1150/acre (very south central) last weekend at an auction. Great hunting ground on top of it. Tim

    NR tags mailed yet?

My Son's archery tag hasn't arrived either. But my doe tag for shotgun season came over the weekend.

    Warm Season Grasses

Great post and I couldn't agree more. Paul helped us a lot as well over the last year and I can't wait to see my switch next year. If it does as good as the field I planted last year, 6-7' tall this year it will be awesome. I didn't mow last year so I ended up spraying my brome again this...

    Youth Muzzleloader loads

From what I've been told, 100g of Triple 7 is equivalent to about 115g of black powder. I would stay with a light bullet and try 50-60g of Triple 7. A heavier bullet will cause the gun to kick more. 15 years ago, 70-90g of black powder was the norm. Until the magnum inlines came along. Tim

    Switchgrass

ajadams, contact your local IDNR private land biologists. They had 50% cost share vouchers for switchgrass seed. I bought my seed a couple weeks ago using the voucher. Switchgrass prices have really gone up since last fall but the voucher will help if you can still get one. Call Roger at...

Dbltree, but I see the IDNR is for raising the NR tags to 12,000. It's all about the $$$. Tim

    Need some help, input please.

The first two things I would do: A) I would sell the Angus ASAP. It looks like you would have more than enough bedding areas but you just need to make them thicker and that's not going to happen with the Angus there. B) I would make food plot #5 as big as possible. First, it's right in the...
