Chestnuts

That looks AWESOME!

I started with a few this year and it has been a lot of fun so far. Got about 95% germination rate. Hoping to get some in the ground later this year.

My 1st addition to the new farm was 10 chestnuts and 10 persimmons. Got hooked up with a guy from WI that sells them. Hopefully this can be an annual thing thru my shop. He sells them in bundles of 10 and it includes tubes, weed mats, stakes, and fertilizer. I'm a newbie so hopefully these pan out out. Plan on caging them soon.

Ive started 100 seeds in 1 gal rootmaker pots on the back patio ( and about half that many direct in tubes on farm and in yard). Caught a squirrel in live trap 3rd day in on corn cob. Guard dog does a pretty good job for most part but he was inside on rain day. Stuck my arlo on main entry to see what goes on. Im investigating some more aggressive trapping options. Hope my soil drains well with all the rain we have got, i got my soil from local buddy that has nursury so not really sure how it will do.

Placed these in the pots about 3-4 weeks ago. They are growing but the cooler temps and all the rain seemed to slow them down some. Hoping to get them in the ground later this year.

Question- How do you guys over winter them so they can be planted in the spring when they are still dormant? Greenhouse? or do you just plant them in an exposed planter bed?

Thanks again for all your input. This has been a fun project so far-- fingers crossed.

I got extra that are dormant in fridge if someone wants a pile. They are sending little shoots out. Premo genetics (can grow iowa, MN, WI, Etc), very sweet & blight resistant. I got way too many. If anyone wants 100+ & can take excellent care of em - I can set em out. Free. Waukee/Urbandale area.

I would be interested for sure. I got a sister in Waukee who could pick them up.

Are they chinese? Dunstan?

Thanks

These are Chinese Chestnut or a 15/16th's hybrid.
FYI, Dunstan are a 15/16th Hybrid... Zone 5 is getting pretty far North for a Dunstan. I have some & like them but they are not going to be as winter hardy as Chinese, etc.

Here’s some moving from trays to pots. Pots to start is easier. But- look at root system starting.

Pretty impressive, are those any special kind of trays? (Rootmaker)

Rootmaker yes. There’s some with far more fibrous root system. Very impressive what rootmakers do. & pretty depressing seeing old style pots that had trees grow in em far too long & get root-wrapped. Rootmakers worth it no brainer.

Ill be anxious to see what mine look like when i pull them out.

Once we get some moisture this fall these are all going in the ground. Several hundred miracle tubes are waiting.

This one was started as a seed in spring of 2019.

Had about 10% die off the 1st year. Is that about normal.????
I know it was mostly my fault with incorrect planting methods.
