deer stand placement in a food plot

i planted a food plot this year. i just put up a deer stand in my food plot. some of my friends put there deer stands on the outer edge of there food plot. what do you think is the best spot to put a deer stand in a food plot?

Downwind edge, pinch points, corner... I guess it depends what you will be using to shoot with. If I had a smoke pole, I'd be sitting on the downwind edge and covering as much of the field as possible. With a bow, I'd be concentrating more on entry and exit routes.

Each situation is different but funnels are crucial when hunting with a bow, otherwise it becomes frustrating...watching deer is fun but shooting them is a whole lot "funner" /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I prefer to setup in some cases back in funnels leading to and from feeding areas. Mornings can be great as deer filter back from feeding all night.

I don't have to enter the feeding areas so I don't spook deer at any time and that can be tough to do if setup right on a feeding area.

For me, food plots are just "insurance" that does will have a place to feed when crops are gone...but in the rut it's not the does I am after. In the same repsect, food is not what mature bucks are after. So by setting up in cover/travel areas leading to the does and feed I have more action.

In the late season I do have a couple spots where I can watch feeding areas but those are better for a smokepole or shotgun as deer simply are to far away and there is no way to "funnel" them.

Setting up on the edge is alright for observation and may work if there is a scrape line but killing a mature back from that stand may prove difficult. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I feel, in small "hunting type plots". You can manipulate some deer movement to a point. Hang your stand on the predominant downwind side and then stack downed trees 40-60 yards straight downwind. Or, remove all licking branches but one on your foodplot, and leave it in the wheelhouse of your stand. Or, 3-4 weeks before season, properly fertilize the plot in the immediate area in front of your stand. Or if you are really ready, build your plots around a single tree. Build a boomerang or v shaped plot upwind of a great tree. You have to get creative. These are just a few things that work for me. But most importantly, any food plot, any time of year, HUNT THE WIND, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! They know the woods twice as well as you think!!!!
