15 years ago I went to a gun show to buy a Ruger 9mm hand gun but I came home with a yellow Lad puppy instead. I named him Ruger.... He has been the best dog that I could have ever asked for. When he was 6-7 his hips started to bother him so I quit hunting him. Over the years he had slowly went down hill. He could get around but in the last couple of years sometimes he had a hard time getting up.
Last summer after a big storm we could not find him anywhere and we looked for hours but could not find him. After about 4 hours I thought I heard him bark, I found him in the bottom of a hugh ditch and he could not get up. He had compleatly used up all he had left trying to get out. I had to carry him back to the house where we put him inside with the A/C on and nursed him untill he was able to stand and walk. It was one of them 90+ with high humidity days..
This morning I could not find him again but every morning he makes his route by going up the gravel road to the neighbors to visit their dogs and then he always makes it back home.. We didnt think anything of it for a while ,but then I started to look for him and could not find him. He was getting hard of hearing so calling his name was useless.. I drove up the road looking for him but no luck, got on the 4 wheeler and drove around the farm looking in all the ditches still no luck.. My wife went up the road again on the 4 wheeler as I was still walking behind our house. She came back and said that she had found him but it was to late.. From the looks of it, he had fallen down and could not get up and the heat and the sun and no water was just to much for him to handle.. He was only gone for 4 hours... But he had used all he had trying to get up... He was a true friend and he was a part of our family.. Burying him was one of the hardest things I have ever done.. He will be missed....
