Awesome work Mud.

I guess those dang OO trees arent totally worthless after all. How big of a straight section do you need, diameter and length? I have a few growing out in the open that might qualify.

Looks awesome.

How long is the process in making one of those pieces of art? And can they dry out and crack?

About 4 hours on Friday night and about 8 hours on Saturday. MatchedSet put in some time picking out the log and he also roughed it down pretty well before I got there because we were hoping to do some shed hunting sunday. He's been at it 15 years and said that begining to end is roughly 16-24 hours work time depending on how easy the log is to work with. This log was overly straight and didn't require any steaming so we saved a lot of time that way.

I think a section anywhere from 6-10 feet long would work, so long as the bark grows straight and doesn't "wind" up the trunk. If it winds then you'll be steaming it straight. Thickness? 8 inches and over are good from what I'e read.

Now I gotta hit amazon and get the books needed to start this on my own.

What a dumb butt! You know now there is no stopping! First you gotta make a bow all on your own, then you make arrows like Shovelbucks's, then comes strings, and several kinds of quivers and other leather goods. By the time you finish your second one you start to look at timber as potential bow wood instead of deer hunting. Recurves and sinew backing and composite bows with bamboo are all future projects. Oh the burdens, splinters, cuts, and string burns. CONGRATULATIONS!! on your first steps on a long and satisfying road.

Tell me about it, I'm already planning a few shed stomps in areas that might yield a log for a couple staves.

I forgot to add if you want reading material get all the volumes of the Traditional Bowyers Bible. Great info on woods, designs, and procedures. Some of the other books by Jim Ham are good also. Good luck and have fun with it.

Yeah, MatchedSet was showing me his volumes, my birthday is in a month and a half, I think those will be on the list. By the time we get a new house I'll have read the books, which is probably smarter than trying to launch off on my own.
