Military... considering retiring in IA

A buck taken on the Reservation... scored 210 (can't remember if that was gross or net). There is some agriculture on the Rez but a lot of the Rez is similar terrain to what you would find on the Public Lands surrounding it.

Sheds from the Rez. These went 217 (I can't remember if that was gross/net and/or with/without spread credit). I got a chance to hold these and I will say these pics don't do them justice... giant.... and found in a big woods area of the Rez away from agriculture.

Not my pic... a friend of mine and a guy I don't know... these are different bucks over 100 miles apart.. one of them is definitely public land (my friends) not sure on the other... Sorry I don't have higher quality pics.

Every once in awhile these guys will show up on your whitetail cam..especially when you are hunting high but also in other areas that have decent populations. This is in a spot where I was hunting a whitetail at 5K feet.

I moved to Iowa from Wisconsin a couple summers back to pursue bigger deer. Honestly, with what you have out there, I think you'd be crazy to move. Just my opinion.

I'm definitely hearing a lot of that. For access and quality WA is definitely no slouch.

Somebody needs to be honest with you........You're crazy man. But good luck anyway on your decision. Wish you the best.

:D

Can you clarify why?

Like I said it's not all about the whitetail...Des Moines has a lot more opportunity for my kids and if you draw a 5-6 hour circle around Des Moines there is tons of opportunity for the kids future.. and WA isn't really my home... just the closest thing I have to a home..... I do love it there.

Any idea what draws are like for NR in WA? If you come out here, run up to NE Iowa, I'll show you some public.

Thank you. Regarding tag draw...It really depends on what you want to go after. Moose/Goat/Sheep can be tough and they are once in a lifetime draws but it's certainly possible to draw a Moose at some point. Quality Elk is tough too but honestly you can get on big elk in any elk areas.... There is no need to draw for whitetail.. unless you want a multi-season tag.. in that case the odds of drawing a multi-season deer tag is very high.... If you ever move to WA I can certainly put you into whitetail areas.. I can't tell you what they are holding at any given time but odds are most areas are holding mature deer... I wouldn't recommend going to WA on a Whitetail DIY from so far out of state unless you had private ground lined up.. the mountains can sometimes be difficult to get into without chains or appropriate tires and it can be hard to narrow those bucks down without a couple weeks minimum (and preferably at least three weeks).

Daniel, Ever thought of doing a Swap Hunt with a resident from Iowa? It was great the forest guy typed his particular question because it goes along with what I'm asking.

You could entertain out in WA State and then have the Iowa resident get you exclusive access to some private here in Iowa if you decide to move out here.

Just a thought I had right before forest guys question and your response to it. Funny how it worked out that way.

I mentioned this earlier but it's lost in the thread by now.. I am currently living in Germany. I am still a WA resident and even have my entire hunting setup, truck and all.. in storage back in WA.

If I lived there currently I would certainly entertain that... in fact I could help a guy out and not even get a hunt in return... because honestly I find more bucks and cover more ground than I can effectively hunt. Every year there are 150 and 160 class bucks that I find and don't hunt. One of the years I chased the 200 inch buck I had a 180 class buck that I didn't hunt at all.

Well... I can post these pictures now that the buck is dead. A friend of mine hunted this public land/big woods/mountain WA buck for the past 3 years. He was at the local sportsman's show this past weekend and saw it hanging on the wall.
