Reason NOT to TRESSPASS !

Had a close call today, one that left me with a sick feeling in my gut.
The family farm shelter belt that I hunt is also being bow hunted by my nephew that is following in his fathers footsteps as a trespasser. While i can't stop him from hunting my brother in laws farm, he does not have or will ever get permission on the land that adjoins it. I've told him several times last year to stay off it, but to deaf ears.
Today, I headed up to sight in a muzzleloader after installing new sights. I usually shoot at 50 yards into the north end of the timber, angling a bit east. Luckily, today, I set up at 17 yards shooting straight north. I arrive there, no vehicles or anyone anywhere to seen. After putting up the target, I fire 4 caps on the gun, load it, and fire. A bit left so I adjust and reload. As I'm about to fire the second round I spot somebody moving in the timber, 30 yds behind the target, right where I'd have been shooting toward if I'd have been at 50 yds. I yelled but no response. I waited a while then heard voices from the adjoining land that only I have permission on. Off I go through the timber and low and behold is my nephews truck but he's not there. We'd crossed paths somewhere as he was making trips back and forth putting up a stand. Anyway, I yell again and he answers this time and comes from the timber over to me where I gave him a pretty good butt chewing about trespassing and me not knowing he was there because of it.
If the kid would of parked on the side he has permission to, I would have known he was there somewhere and not shot at that location.
Hopefully I got his attention but I doubt it. His dad is still the same way.
I can't imagine how bad family get togethers would have been had he caught a bullet.

WOW..tough situation for sure Shovel. Blood or no blood he needs the law called on him. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Tresspassers ahve always puzzled me. I have a large tract of land across the road from me. The owner is in another state most of the time. His land is full of good sign. Early on I asked if I could hunt an edge of it ,but he said he was sorry he didn't want anyone to hunt it. Well,, some can't obviously overcome the temptation, because I found several shot deer on it last winter. The rule of treating others, including their property the way you want to be treated would seem to apply. I ask some,,"How do you feel, when you see someone tresspassing on your land"?? Then the person down the road feels the same about you.

Those that "puzzle" me are those that own property themselves, and get mad when they see someone has been on it, yet they have no problem going on anothers without permission. I have met some.

Good point, Maybe those are people who think the rules don't apply to them.

I know one of them. He has a great piece of ground right across the road from where I hunt. Great timber and a huge amount of big deer and turkey. No one is allowed on his property, not even his relatives. He does not hunt, nor is he a PETA type, just won't let people on his ground.

The funny thing is, according to my neighbors and people who have known this guy for a long time, when he was younger he would hunt coons with his dad, and felt nothing about trespassing on other folks ground. Even did damage to fences I have been told.

Hard to respect someone like that, but I will always respect his ground.

That would have been enough for me Jay! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

That does stink though and pretty sobering when you think about what could have happened. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

I'm always amazed at how brazen some people are about trespassing......

It pisses me off when someone just cuts through my yard and then they don't even acknowledge I sitting right there watching them do it. They must think because it's in town it's different or something. I need a big mean dog out there in the yard. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Want to get really frustrated. Go on some morel hunting forums. People on those (and I suppose some hunters are the same) feel the mushrooms are gods bounty and that nobody has the "right" to them. They are for anyone to harvest. IMO mushroom hunters are the worst for trespassing with deer hunters not far behind. After I purchased my ground it was amazing the people who would use the excuse that they had permission from the previous landowner from a few years ago. Amazing how many think asking once is enough. If the LO doesn't give you permanent permission they should be asked every year.

I thought he wouldn't let you on it?

I have learned that yelling at tresspassers is a waste of time..

They will only stop tresspassing that day and will continue there ways once you are gone again..

You have to turn in tresspassers...

They need to have consequences for their mistakes....

You have given your nephew plenty of warnings, it is time for him to get a fine or loose his hunting rights for a year...

I think he would get the picture then...
