Had a close call today, one that left me with a sick feeling in my gut.
The family farm shelter belt that I hunt is also being bow hunted by my nephew that is following in his fathers footsteps as a trespasser. While i can't stop him from hunting my brother in laws farm, he does not have or will ever get permission on the land that adjoins it. I've told him several times last year to stay off it, but to deaf ears.
Today, I headed up to sight in a muzzleloader after installing new sights. I usually shoot at 50 yards into the north end of the timber, angling a bit east. Luckily, today, I set up at 17 yards shooting straight north. I arrive there, no vehicles or anyone anywhere to seen. After putting up the target, I fire 4 caps on the gun, load it, and fire. A bit left so I adjust and reload. As I'm about to fire the second round I spot somebody moving in the timber, 30 yds behind the target, right where I'd have been shooting toward if I'd have been at 50 yds. I yelled but no response. I waited a while then heard voices from the adjoining land that only I have permission on. Off I go through the timber and low and behold is my nephews truck but he's not there. We'd crossed paths somewhere as he was making trips back and forth putting up a stand. Anyway, I yell again and he answers this time and comes from the timber over to me where I gave him a pretty good butt chewing about trespassing and me not knowing he was there because of it.
If the kid would of parked on the side he has permission to, I would have known he was there somewhere and not shot at that location.
Hopefully I got his attention but I doubt it. His dad is still the same way.
I can't imagine how bad family get togethers would have been had he caught a bullet.
