I'm confused over your statement regarding the Supreme Court interpreting the constition "as it is written." The term interpret, as defined in Webster's, means " ... to conceive in the light of individual belief, judgment, or circumstance." The founding fathers could not have imagined the changes that this country has gone through and didn't intend for the document to be followed to the letter, but that the general principles would be "interpreted" to fit the situation. That interpretation is what I would define as a living, breathing document ... we're not still living in 1776!
