I would like to thank all of you who took the time to come to the public meeting and voice your opinion or send your comments by mail or email. I appreciate your comments.

Based upon your comments here are the recommendations I sent to Dale Garner. Please let me know what you think. I will keep you informed as to what happens.

My recomendation.

Based upon the input received at the public meetings and from the website here are the changes I would recommend we make to the deer rule.

1. Further restrict the counties that are open for the November antlerless season. I would only have the November season in those counties where we do not expect to sell out the antlerless quota. This would eliminate many of the counties from the November season where we heard hunters complain about it and only put it in those counties where it is absolutely needed. There would be about 25 counties open, mostly in southern and northeast Iowa. We would just need to publish a map just like we do for the January season.

2. For the early muzzleloader season I would keep the proposed change that allows hunters who purchase one of the 7,500 either sex licenses during the early muzzleloader season to purchase an antlerless license during the shotgun or late muzzleloader season in other counties if they are available. I would not however allow hunters from other seasons to purchase antlerless licenses in the early muzzleloader season. Making these changes would allow more deer to be killed in those counties where the extra harvest is needed rather than shift antlerless licenses from the shotgun season to the early muzzleloader season. Shifting hunters to the early muzzleloader season was the number one complaint we received. It is also counter productive to killing more deer as it shifts licenses from the shotgun seasons to the early muzzleloader seasons. We will kill more deer if the extra antlerless licenses are issued during the shotgun seasons as shotgun hunters have a higher success rate. This change would address many of the complaints and maintain the quality of the early muzzleloader season while not restricting early muzzleloader hunters from hunting in other seasons.

Thank you!

Your proposals give me renewed hope. I just hope they listen to the guy who is the expert.

Thank you for letting us know about the meeting and for keeping us informed. The statement that we as hunters are not as well organized as the insurance companies, etc is true. While we can call our reps and senators we all need to join organizations that are political. As was mentioned last night Pheasants Forever, DU and other organizations are getting together to form a political arm that will lobby for what we the hunters want. So you need to join those organizations and pay the membership dues and due with out a snickers bar or brewsky for a couple of nights and keep our sport in our hands not the farm bureau or the register.

Great recommendations. Hopefully they follow through with them and I am glad that our voices were heard, at least by some. Thanks again

Willie you are indeed the voice of reason! No matter how this turns out I think we all appreciate your common sense approach to managing both our deer herd and our deer hunters.
Thank you for always keeping us updated! I support your ideas

Willie, great recomendations, even if we do say so ourselves. The big question now is how do we get the powers that be to take these recomendations that you, the deer biologist hired by the State of Iowa, feel should be adopted? Where and on whom can we put our own pressure, because you know the other factions will be poring it on? Thanks again for all the information and caring enough to keep us informed!
