The one that got away

I havent read many stories on here about the "One that got away".

Anyone have any good stories about deer or any other animal that they had been going after all year, and when you had the perfect opportunity it went sour? Just wanna hear some good stories!!!

Man, i could tell you the tale of "SCAR BACK", the Muskie... But i would get cramps in my fingers from typing... Hell of a story tho!

Last summer i was run'n three holders with cranks look'n for a few eyes with the kid and old lady... I was swinging into a transition area that has a great whole about 15 ft. Giant fish hold there when it gets sunny out... not having hooked up there ALL year, my daughter sprints for the long rigg. I saw the pole buckled over with a steady log like weight(BIG WALLEYE) The fish did'nt break suface for about 4 minutes, she quickly gave the rod up and it was on! I was stuck in the trans area a could'nt get out, the fish would'nt give me anything..... long story short, i put $18,000 worth of 115 EFI MERC slam'n into the rocks(NOT GOOD ON THE MOTOR) The fish finally showed herself at netting range, when i relized she was well over 30" panic set in... I went for the shot and seconds before "NET IMPACT" she shook and it was over...... I believe she was knock'n at the 13-14lb. mark. Woul'nt have been my biggest eye, but a hell of a Des Moines river eye!!

No one said they had to be the truth. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif lol

Did you use any obscense words in front of the wife and kid? Glad that didnt happen to the monster Lake Sturgeon

Frik ya i did!! I was more mad about the motor than anything!!...... I went back the next day and ran that trench for 3 hours and BOOYAH, hook her little sister.. 10lb.8 oz.

One more true one..... So i was on the mouth of Winnie at about 5:45am a few years back and i was working a Giant Poe's for some sanbar ski's.... After launching the pound bait 40 times, i decided to move in on a cattail bed. I heaved the bait into a pocket , slowely twicthed the pole one time and she walked to the left... smack into a reed! As i got ready to put the "yank down" and get my $hit outta there , the water exploded in a 6ft radious! The bait went sailing thru the air and landed Dead!... I felt a cold flash go thru my body! I fired the motor up and got the hell outta there!! "Leaving big fish like that alone for a while sometimes pays off". A front came in that day and i had what we call "DARK WATER ,DARK DEATH" There was only one thing left to do... Hit that spot! I got there and burn'd a bucktail for about 6 casts, and on the last one , here he came playing follow the leader! This sucks! he made it within 20 ft and I poured on the burners, hoping for a "pissed off strike". By the time he was ready to inhale the rig i was at the boat, no figure 8 or noth'n! I got the rigg outta the water and watched as 55-60" inches of moose glided under the boat. I put that fish at an easy 40lbs. one of my biggest blow ups and follows in my whole life!

Well, I have a story bout the one that got away. Or more like the one that "never was".

Christmas Eve 2005, my hunting partner and I are out on the ATVs pulling several stands down. We stopped so I could pull a stand and a camera a point that runs out into a swamp with a beaver dam running away from the point. Up high on the point I had placed my camera on the most used deer trail. We stumbled across the fence into the woods and up to my camera. As I knelt down to take my camera of the tree my partner says HOLY SH!+! I look over as he pulls a 67in 6point shed up 6in from my knee. FRESH! Well, wowzza. "Lets go get the other side, its down under them pines on tip of the point" I said it like Im some sort of expert. We wonder down the trail to the point, with me in the lead, BOOM right there in plain sight like god wanted us to find them. SCORE! 66 and 67 6x6 FRESHIES with blood on the bases. A friend had found one side to this buck from the year before a month earlier. We wait a few months go in pick up the other side from the year previous 3/4 mile away from the fresh set. Now we have 2 years of sheds from a buck we've never seen. And the legend starts "The Buck at the Farm."

2006, I see him 1 time confirmed in the grey twilight in early August looks like he is 225inches. See him one more time in the spot light running away in late september 2006. Spring 2006, look to no avail for his sheds. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

2007, See a buck in the spot light same place as I saw him in 06 had to be him-Unconfirmed sighting. Set up several places around his suspected "core bedding area" No other sightings. Unsure if "The buck at the farm" is alive or even in the county. Hunting/Scouting/Trail cam/Glassing... NO sign :(. Last bow hunt in his area before 07 gun season I hang a trail cam on a scrape 200yds from where he was shot.

He was shot where I picked up the second fresh shed, on the tip of the point. Grossed out at 184inches, 16point. He was shot by the land owners cousin, the only other person that hunts real close to where I found those sheds.

Tommorow I will post the harvest pic that I scanned out of the Outdoors Newspaper.
