Weasel Hunting Tactics

Since things are kind of slow around here I thought I'd post a few pics of a critter that is not going to make it much longer living in my garage -

My wife saw this little guy sticking his head out from between two boxes in my garage yesterday. When she called me at work and told me about him and I told her to whack him with something she instantly acted like she worked for PETA.

All I had were visions of him chewing on my taxidermy racks, my bow string, etc...while I sat at work thinking the worst.

She couldn't get him out of the garage before she had to go to work, so he got to hang out there all day. When she got home he was sitting on my Block target kind of acting like he was waiting for her. I finally got home and was able to see him scurry under my work bench never to be seen again. I was on a mission to eradicate this little bastard but I could not find him to save my life. There was droppings and pee all over the place, but this morning I didn't find any fresh sign of him.

I will be armed with a Red Ryder BB gun after work today......

What do you think would work best? Finding his bedding area and sitting between there and his food source? Building a natural blind and waiting for him to appear? Putting a stand up in my garage and bait him with chunks of cheese?

Just thought you guys might like to see him...he is kind of a cute little guy - until I find one chew mark on any antler in the garage!!! I'd never seen one before and origianlly thought it was a mink, but I was a little confused.

Think he'll go Boone and Crocket? Maybe I'll do a life size mount on him if I get him.

Get a rat trap (like a big mouse trap, and put a little piece of liver on the trigger. He will be waiting for you the next morning. Then mount him and put him next to the deer mounts he would have destroyed if he had the chance.

I used to trap quite a few of them back in the day. Bloody meat especially heart or liver works the best, they cannot resist it.

Ahhhhhh, just shoo him out and let the little guy live.

I actually feed one in my wood pile deer scraps every winter.

I would have a hard time thumping him. They are protected here anyway I think. Cute little bugger.

I really don't want to whack him, but I can't take the risk of him helping himself to any of my taxidermy projects - just trying to bring something new to the forum to talk about since it's pretty slow this time of year.

I also don't want him taking up residence in there and crapping and pissing on everything like he's already done.

Borrow one of Bonkers cats.

Borrow hell, I'll give 'em to ya. The outside cats that is. The inside cats wouldn't know what to do. The little guy would probably molest them both then have 'em for a snack.

This may sound hillbilly but......a neighbour of mine said one found his way into their hme a few winters back. Didn't want tokill him and couldn't catch him so....................by the end of winter the little bugger was eating bacon out of his hand.

If you're gonna bait him, get somebacon and set up somewhere off the sweet smell of maple.

Yhea, and the piss and crap issue would be doubled with Bonker's cats around, they like blue chairs.

UPDATE - the weasel lives! My wife has evidence of his presence since this morning. Just the kind of evidence I was just talking about - the soft brown kind right in front of her car on the floor. I'm going into battle this weekend.

I had a muskrat in my garage late this fall and had to put a pellet in him after a careful stalk. I had no choice but to shoot him, he would come and go as he pleased when the door was open. Those ermine like meat and I would bait him with bacon as Kaare mentioned or chicken.

Weasel's are not protected in Iowa.

Where I live you must have a fur trappers licence to take a weasel. I'd live trap him and move him to a local chicken farm.

Cool little critters! I had one in the freezer once and hoped to get in mounted but somehow it escaped from the freezer, or at least that is what I was told.

For those of you who are not very familiar with weasels, they are a mustelid, same family as the skunk. If you had one in your garage for very long you would understand the connection. Nuff said.
