Brassicas

I'm in the same situation as darkhollow. Planted an acre on July 27th and not a drop since. If we don't get any rain by the weekend, I'll probably plant some winter rye. Fields are bone dry, just keep getting missed with all these storms

4 years ago I planted brassica's around July 27th. They received 0 rain until the Sunday of Labor Weekend. They actually did better than I thought they would, considering the growing time was 30-40 days. This year using Pauls crop rotation method I actually had germination without any rain. Although the 2" of rain we finally received this morning was a blessing!
 
Turnips are dying

Any ideas on why my turips are dying only thing I can think of is to much rain. They were awesome looking at the beginning of August and now they pretty much all turned.

bowtech-what did you have planted prior to planting the brassicas? I usually put 100# per acre of nitrogen which is way less than dbltree recommends and I have no problem. If you plant brassicas following beans or clover there should have been enough nitrogen for a decent stand.
 
That looks like to much water. Saturated soils are almost worse than to dry once they have germinated . My plots looked a lot better before these latest rains. Another sign is the ones on the fringe of the dead looking ones have the reddish tinge a sure sign of stress.
 
Hold tight, they usually come back in September. it could be a combo of soil type (poor spot), lack of nutrients, etc. I bet they do ok though.
 
How much rain have you guys had here recently? We (here in SW Iowa-Bedford specifically). Have got 4.62 inches over the past 72hours. I didn't get my brassicas in until Aug. 10-12, but they look great. I did get some nitrogen on them as well before the last good rain, which was a couple inches probably 2 1/2 weeks ago.

I would think it has to be a nutrient thing not necessarily too much rain, but just curious how much you guys have gotten and where you are located.

I have one plot on a bottom and it is the only one I am worried about in terms of holding water. I won't go out and look at them for a couple days when it hopefully dries out some.

Mine did the same thing last year. Looked great until late August/early September. I'm quite sure mine was lack of nitrogen. Without knowing your situation, I'd guess the same on yours.
 
turips

We had 4.5" of rain between those dates of the pics. There are turnips in there the size of baseballs already. Wouldn't think it was a fertilizer problem but it could be. They are in soils that don't drain well. It has 250# of Triple 13 an acre on it. Nothing was planted before it was a grassy area insinde of some timber I cleaned out.

With that much rain, your fertilizer may have leached down through the soil and out of the zone where your roots can get it.

I saw the same thing here after a 3 inch rain. I don't think they like any standing water on them.

Yep. Good thing is, those roots grow fast and USUALLY will catch it. You have a possibility always of a crop failure but again, I say hang in there. Worst case, I know this is getting late in the game, if Sept 15-20 get here and they look toast, like there's no chance of a rebound, I'd quickly put in a rye mix (which, yes, is getting a touch late) in the worst spots. I've seen some miraculous recoveries but watch them close. If you wanted, if Nitrogen was one of the culprits, you could throw down some slow release Urea. Like I was at Thiesen's the other day and they had slow release lawn fertilizer without 2,4-D in it (more expensive buying from store like that for lawns), I think it was 26-0-0. Put down 100-150 lbs per acre of that would help.
 
To much rain can cause problems some we have no control over but try top dressing urea just before the next rain.

Make sure you soil test after season

Are you using the crop rotation?

This is the first year but yes I won't put it in turnips next year. I will say the deer are hammering the tops. Usually they don't touch them till after a frost. I thought it could be a nitrogen problem but just never happened to me before with turnips.

The reason I ask is because once you use the rotation a few years and build organic matter,to much or to little water will become less of a problem
 
August 30, 2014

The past 2 years we had record drought but this year above normal rainfall making it a challenge to get things planted



Those that we got planted are doing great




Deer will thin these soon




Some farms we'll have to go with the rye mix only but we're hoping these don't get water logged

 
Mine got "water logged". They are fairly young since they only went in Aug. 11, but standing water in places has me worried!
