The bigger the seed, the more energy it has to push through that initial thatch layer and find sunlight.About 10 days ago I no-till drilled brassicas into a killed off clover plot that had a lot of foxtail in it. It was a plot that I frost seeded red clover last spring and didn't keep up on foxtail/weed control. Hatch quite a lot of thatch and appears that I don't have a very good stand because of thatch. Definitely a fair amount coming along but not near what I want. Should I till it up and replant brassicas right now? Or should I leave it alone and drill in rye/wheat/radish mix 9/1? Not sure if the rye/wheat/radish combo is going to have much more luck coming through the heave thatch/mulch?
That being said, if you want brassicas you still have time to till and replant. Should have some stored nitrogen in the soil from the terminated clover too.
