Switchgrass

Thanks Anyone use the powder version of Simazine or any other product like that? Any advice when mixing for a ATV 26 gallon sprayer? I know you need to mix it in a small container before putting in the tank.

I've got the granular version of atrazine, all the information I can find states 1lb of granular is equal to 1 qt of the liquid version. Does anyone have experience with the granular? Farmer told me they use a lesser rate for their corn spraying but they don't have any experience spraying switchgrass (obviously).

Granular will work same way. Label will tell u how to mix so it’s equivalent rates. Needs a lot of agitation to mix it well. It might be more concentrated but the label will tell u this in one quick read.

The weather finally broke here in MI. Too late to spray gly? Or just Simazine or Atrazine? Here are some pics from my drilling from September.

So, this is a stand that is going into its 3rd growing season. Last year, lots of foxtail. Sprayed quorilac (sp?). Looks sparse. And concerned about how much duff there is. Thinking a burn would help? What would you do?

TIA!

Hmmmm. U might leave it & monitor…. It’s a bit of a gamble. If the stand has enough plants- it will take over. Foxtail just stops coming when soil isn’t disturbed…. Sometimes it’s best to leave it be. On other hand….. if u do notice lots of foxtail coming…. Hit it in a month or so with quinclorac & methylated seed oil. Could add atrazine or simazine as well.
If the stand is thin…. Lot of options…. Burning, seeding more. & probably herbicide treatment like I mentioned above. The fact that u have a core of established plants is getting you way ahead.
If this were mine, I guess I might be seeding some more switch & planning quinclorac + meth seed oil & atrazine. Not a perfect answer here. A lot of options in reality. Monitor & react based on weeds, new switch coming in, etc.

Thanks, Skip. I’m leaning towards running a fire through it in the next couple of weeks to burn off the thatch. Then monitor and use chems later, if needed. Any negative side effects to that approach?

Burning is fine. However, I have a section like yours. It improved from year one to year two. We are going to wait one more year to see the full results.
End of year three is always the magic year, regardless of the stand success early on.

Drilled 10 acres of Switch yesterday. Mix of Realworld , Northwoods RC Tecumseh, RC Bigrock and 2 acres of Shawnee. Going to spray Atrazine this weekend and sit back and watch. I'm not expecting a lot this year but next year is should rock.

Also planting RWW switch this year. Did some freezing / cold stratification of the seed the last few months. We'll see what germination looks like..

I did not stratify . I drilled last August and the whole world said it wouldn't take. Watch now it will come and and explode. I sprayed it all three weeks ago and all the bluegrass was smoked. Hopefully this will take and I will be good for sometime.

This is a 3rd year stand of switch grass. I have over seeded it after year 1 and year 2. Are the little shoots coming up switch?

In SE Iowa would frost seeded switchgrass already have germinated this spring? Back in February i frost seeded cave in rock and one other (cannot recall but maybe kanlow) into bean stubble. I sprayed roundup about 3-4 weeks ago and i dont see any signs of anything coming. Wondering if it is still too early or if it was already popping up and i killed it. Doesn’t seem like it has been warm enough but a buddy thinks his is starting to show.
