I agree with you on *almost* everything when it comes to deer hunting and have a huge amount of respect for everything you have done and have done for all of us but I don’t quite agree with you that the “buck craze” has nothing to do with our current situation. 30 years ago there were most definitely people obsessed with killing big deer but they were not nearly as common and even fewer had the ability to do it.
Totally hypothetical but let’s just say you owned 1000 acres back in the day.. 30 years ago.. maybe 1 or two of your neighbors cared about shooting trophy deer.. and maybe their definition of a trophy wasn’t even the same. Maybe one had it figured out and was only harvesting trophy deer that were 5yrs plus and the other was shooting the best buck he could get regardless of age. The rest of your neighbors were happy shooting deer that weren’t even on your radar…
Today all of your neighbors are into shooting trophy deer and the *knowledge* not just the technology/regulations are there for them to do it. A few are targeting 5yr old plus deer and a few are still killing the highest scoring deer possible. These people now have the ability to do it regardless of whether the regulations are what they are today or what they were 30 years ago. 30 years of people talking, writing, making videos on how to hunt trophy deer has caught up to us. The bar has been raised. There is not the monopoly on shooting trophy deer that there used to be. This has without a doubt hurt the top end of trophy quality in certain areas and changing regulations back to what it was back in the good old days would not necessarily bring it back.. I have no answer on how to fix it but hopefully it’s cyclical and the people that are currently taking out a lot of the great up and comers will eventually move on and up their standards a little. If they don’t I hope everybody at least finds a way to still enjoy hunting and hopefully there is room for everyone.
The buck craze has without a doubt also lead to everyone tying up as much ground as possible in hopes of harvesting a buck that’s up to the standards of the current hunting world. It’s not strictly to isolate themselves from poor regulations

This is a great comment & post!! Well thought out points & a lot of valid points!!!
I think every walk of hunters - serious To casual has gripes about where hunting is & direction it’s going. Let’s think about it from each perspective….
CASUAL hunter…. I just want a place to hunt!! Like to see deer. Be cool to “get a big buck” but happy to just get one. Their view might be: “money has ruined hunting”. “Guys that want big bucks have created situation where I have no access”. The bigger one in iowa lately “deer #’s way down. The average farms kinda stink or drastically worse than in past”. “Don’t see THE BIG ONE very often anymore”. Public is more crowded & I lose places to hunt often.
Some on all sides might blame: SOCIAL MEDIA, POLITICIANS, $, INSURANCE COMPANIES (farm bureau), Rich man’s sport, big buck craze, lack of deer & habitat. All of these have some validity to them.
SERIOUS GUYS: same thing: I want a quality place to hunt!! Deer #’s way down. Age structure hurting, far fewer mature bucks. Habitat wiped out. Need $ or massive time to play at top level. The politicians, farm bureau & dudes blasting everything so there’s far fewer deer & mature bucks is really hurting!!
Now, let’s look at some realities…. I’ll show u the state that TRIES to only manage for deer #’s & NOT AGE STRUCTURE, which is the biggest joke in country: MICHIGAN! KILL EM ALL regulations. Long seasons. Infinite weapons. 2 buck tags. Basically unlimited doe tags. WHAT IS THE RESULT??? 1/3rd of hunters have quit in last 25 years (yes, this is a far higher rate than Iowa) & new hunter rates extremely low. You do not get access to land!!! Tied up, leased, locked down or hunt public that’s ridiculous. Mature bucks- non existent … ok a few on rare occasion but LIGHT YEAR DIFFERENCE vs IA or even neighbors OH/IN which has 1 buck limit. Everyone there knows it sucks. Everyday dudes quitting or pulling hair out. Serious guys lock up anything they can but usually just leave the state to hunt. That’s the result when you give zero consideration to age structure & open regulations up to the lunatics!!!!
My question: who is hurt by a somewhat balanced age class across the state? The answer: NO ONE! Who is hurt by a lack of mature bucks??? Serious hunters for one! I’ll be BRUTALLY HONEST- I’d quit or move if I didn’t have a chance. Exactly what’s happening to hunters in ruined states!!! Who else is hurt by lack of mature bucks: everyday dudes! Yep! U remove them from the overall regular areas…. It causes the guys with $ or drive or the serious hunters to have the knee jerk reaction to lock land up!!!!! MO has way less mature bucks than us, you cross that magic line into MO & the land is far more locked up!!! By big buck crazed guys!!! MORE LOCKED UP BUT…. There’s less big bucks!!! How is that possible?!?! REGULATIONS!!!!! Open flood gates, lots of tags, tons of weapons & seasons that wipe bucks out. So- dudes say “screw the regs, I’m gonna insulate from this madness!!!” …. You think we have issues from “big bucks” to the degree we do, it’s nothing compared to our neighbors & all have less than we do on far more habitat and far more deer.
I would say our biggest threat, period, is BAD REGULATIONS!!!!!! Not the big bucks craze. Not social media. Not even $!!!….. $ creates bad regulations in many cases so that one relates but still bottom lines at policy & regs. Everything is defined by sound, conservative & balanced regulations!!!! Iowa is top of pack but has trended down for regulation changes!!!! My point is, let’s stop the trend down. Let’s stop liberalizing things. Let’s tighten up so we can lift everyone up around the state vs their current situation. REGULATIONS!!!!!!!!
