Simazine>atrazine for foxtail. I have done pursuit as a pre. That worked pretty darn well for foxtail. Foxtail have to stay on top of with mowing or go the quinclorac/MSO route
Absolutely not unless you smother with with duff from mowing. I've seen patches of switch mowed like a lawn year 1 repeatedly and turn out great.I remember stressing pretty bad last year about this time over the same thing…couldn’t positively identify much switch then, bam! Fingers crossed.
Question, if there was a decent population of young switch in there and it was 8-12” tall, now it’s mowed down to 5”, does that kill it?
I would avoid 24d on early switchgrass. Thanks for the replies Rob. My plan is to spray 2,4-D & Quinclorac in a couple weeks. Concern there is what about the areas where nothing had emerged…what if those seedlings are just popping…I might smoke them.
I didn’t stress this much when either of my sons were born, lol!
I will take a photo next time I am at the farm but I have a area that I planted switch into last year. I let it go all year with little switch being present and massive amounts of Foxtail. I burned it this spring and this year it looks wonderful. Why us deer hunters worry more about switch than any other thing that we plant is beyond me but we surely do!Thanks for the replies Rob. Looks really good! That right there is proof positive of a major advantage of drilling vs broadcasting seed. Clearly identifiable rows of switch. Every field of switch I’ve planted, I’ve had to play the, “is it switch” identification game.Dad planted 10 acres of RCBR on his river bottom farm 6/18 Seed from @IowaBowHunter1983
Burned down with nuclear cocktail and 2 q/acre of atrazine.
This should prove to be a good stand.

That is a tough game, too! I lose a lot at that game...Looks really good! That right there is proof positive of a major advantage of drilling vs broadcasting seed. Clearly identifiable rows of switch. Every field of switch I’ve planted, I’ve had to play the, “is it switch” identification game.
Looks incredible!Experiment: initial results. Good!
This was an area of locust we cleared, burned, and disced.
Drilled RC Big Rock June 7, 2024.
Sprayed gly & duracor June 8, 2024.
NO OTHER PREEMERGENT HERBICIDES.
Pic today, 1 month later.
This will be an excellent stand. The new found ability to plant switchgrass well into the summer using RC Big Rock def has changed the game.

How long is the route you’re trying to screen? 3-4 rows of miscanthus might be an option? We recently purchased a property and removed some ground from CRP for an area to create destination food. Alongside this destination food, we want to border it with switchgrass to screen our access.
This field is on a pretty decent east facing hillside. I would say moderate to likely erosion possibilities during establishment. The CRP is mostly grasses that don't get much over 4' tall. My guess is mostly cool season grasses and a few forbs.
What method would you guys use to execute the planting? Pretty much any establishment method can be on the table at this point. We have access to a drill. Located in SW WI and planting RC Bigrock.
Would you spray it this fall to get an early kill on grasses and hope the roots hold through next spring's snow melt and rain? Spray in the spring for the first time on green up and drill? Will apply atrazine at time of planting regardless of when initial spraying is completed.
Thanks for the input.
Miscanthus will be an option we are still weighing and might be directly in front of the blind. The rest of the unused area (non-plot) will be switchgrass. I should have spelled that out a little better. Those areas will be ~3 acres and too much for miscanthus. How long is the route you’re trying to screen? 3-4 rows of miscanthus might be an option?

2 quarts glyLooks great! What was your amount per acre for the herbicide mixture?

Earlier I had posted about some switch that I planted in Spring of 2023. This was a previous bean field so it was fairly clean when I frost seeded in March. After I seeded I literally did nothing. The weeds were 20000 ft tall and there was TONS of Foxtail. This spring I went in and burned mid April. Here is the result. This is proof to stop stressing about your switch. It's there and will come on stronger the second year.
One thing to pay attention to as well is your seed variety choice. You can see clearly in the photo where I planted cave in rock and RC Big Rock. It truly unbelievable how much better the RC seed is. I planted the exact same day and marked it off with flags so I would know. I would never buy CIR again. It's almost non-existent in comparison. I am 6'3 for reference

Yes. Same day, everything the exact samePlanted at same time? Same method? Interesting..
