With all the fraud and twisted places our tax money goes to, private schools should be the least of our worries. My biggest concern would be that they take the money and turn private schools into hybrid government schools, teaching what they teach in the government school system. While I think education is very important, but I'm not a fan of tax payers money going to private schools. You choose private schooling because you have the funds to send your kids there. A large percentage of Iowa citizens don't have the funds to do that, yet they should pay taxes to support a private school? I compare this thinking to giving tax money to support Lake Panorama like the state does its state and county lakes.
Just a FWIW on the subject of public schools v. financially supporting private schools, etc, etc. I live in the Iowa City School District (ICCSD) and things could not be MORE out of whack than they are here right now. Literally millions of dollars that they cannot "find", the district has had their bond rating revoked...not downgraded, revoked. They literally cannot borrow money right now, all the local banks have denied them, etc, etc. Instead of firing the clown in charge of this giant mess, he will be moving to another Sr level position in the district while they now look for a permanent replacement. With all the fraud and twisted places our tax money goes to, private schools should be the least of our worries. My biggest concern would be that they take the money and turn private schools into hybrid government schools, teaching what they teach in the government school system.
Congrats to Lahn! If Sand wins by one vote, it won't be mine.
Donno about anyone else but I’m thrilled to see Feenstra lose! Lahn is no doubt the best chance to beat Sand. Have we ever seen a more half as*ed campaign by a supposed front runner?? If you wont debate the R field why on earth would we trust you to debate the other side? As far as examples of anti- modern ag.. my issues are mainly with the people some of Lahn’s talking points appeal to.. has anybody ever looked up the potential land use that may be needed if a state or country went to totally organic? Non gmo? No CAFOs? Regenerative? Where does property for hunting and conservation fit in where every acre available is devoted to feeding ourselves?? Look it up! As much as we battle modern ag when it comes to hunting it is still the main reason we can even begin to think about conservation and land use for hunting purposes. Starving, broke people never care about conservation. Again, not that he has supported any or all of this but he is definitely trying to appeal to these people and they are nuts! Would be dead within a year if they actually had to feed themselves and would be the first to cry when their food costs go up 25-50%. It’s a fine line and hopefully he can walk it. We need real improvement in our ag sector/food chain without giving into the crazies that believe every thing they read on the internet and everything certain podcast bros bring up. I’ve enjoyed great access for hunting all because some farmers wanted a few more deer killed.. We need a stable and prosperous farm economy in this state, obviously Lahn agrees with that but many in the movement for cleaner air and water are living in fantasy land and have unrealistic expectations on what that might look like. We need to do things better and there are things that can be done but somebody eventually has to be honest and call out the BS. Modern ag is WAY more environmentally friendly than it was previously in any of our lifetimes. There is nobody alive today that didn’t have worse crap sprayed everywhere and more inefficient fertilizer use than when they were younger. This is a fact. The good ol days libby old retired teachers talk about did not exist. Grandpa sprayed basically straight poison everywhere and his hogs crapped everywhere and in every stream. It was not better! Of course we can and need to keep improving but the good ol days were definitely not better for the environment and especially hunting…. The majority of the timber I hunt is loaded with deer today.. you don’t have to go too far back and it was loaded with hogs and cattle.. Only modern ag made this possible.. Only prosperous modern agriculture is keeping landowners from selling out to housing developments, data centers etc.. It’s always nice to think about more land being on the market but we have to realize hunters are a very small percentage of the population.. Most land will eventually be bought by anti-hunters or we’ll end up with tracts of land with a few hunters when there use to be dozens.. What does this do for conservation?? The greenies are a lot of talk and no $$ usually. Who is left to fund conservation when nobody cares because there is no place to go hunting anyway? If so many people care about our land and think they would be better caretakers of it why are they not getting their checkbooks out?? Why can’t they make it profitable?? Who really wins when a curveball is thrown to modern ag?? Is it really going to be all of us and/or the small farmer?? Or is it going to be the biggest guys/corporations there is?? Historically only the biggest/most well funded survive major changes.. land gets chopped up and control gets concentrated. Is that good for hunting long term? Again, Lahn has not directly supported all of the anti-modern ag stuff but there is a growing percentage of the population that is totally in fantasy land and is falling for every bs article and social media post that is ant-ag. Nobody wins if these people get too much power. I agree with Lahn on 90%+ of stuff and will definitely send $$ to hopefully help beat Sand. Glad he hunts at least but that is about it..
I had a big reply typed up last week but I saw the Barn Talk guys had Lahn on their show so I waited for them to release it so I could post it here for for everyone, but also in response to you as I think you should listen to him yourself because you're painting him in a way that isn't accurate... in my opinion. If you want to show me these anti-modern ag half truths he's all about please do.... you don't need to save me the time, I'll make the time. This is important, so please share them as I don't at all think he is someone that is somehow anti-modern ag and doesn't understand downstream implications of unproductive agriculture.
This is a good listen and hopefully some folks have some windshield time they can pop it on.
It’s crazy how many restrictions there are. I would think most commercial applicators are aware of all the restrictions because nobody wants to lose their license or $$.. the private guys I’m not too sure about. You would know how many different chemicals are there that have a restriction on how close they can be sprayed to the water I think atrazine is 66 feet? I would imagine 99% of corn acres in Iowa are sprayed with atrazine once if not twice. so if you see corn within 66 feet of water that laws 99% chance being broken, I wonder how many others have a restriction like that not to mention the old Wells out in the fields where the corn is planted 2 feet from the concrete well cap on each side would hate to know how many of those get sprayed over with a ground rig or a airplane or a drone or a helicopter.
